Eastern Washington Students Shine In 8Th-Grade Math Is Cool Contest

Twenty-seven teams from 12 Eastern Washington schools participated in the 1998-99 Eighth Grade Math is Cool Championship, sponsored by The Engraver and hosted by the Lewis and Clark High School Math Team.

Students in the top seven teams and their schools are listed in order of placing: Liyang Chen, David Khan, Chad Tang and Josh Zhang, Lincoln Middle School, Pullman; Mark Charyk, Aaron DeFeyter, Chris Halvorson and Ken Vorhees, St. George’s School; Lindsay Clairmont, Brian Johnson, Drew Schoentrup and Joe Stachecki, St. Aloysius School; Andrew Colins, Sam Shin, Ryan Tenold and Travis Welt, St. George’s School; Keisha Carlson, Caitlin Connelly, Anna Czechowski and Lili Kellman, Sacajawea Middle School; Christine Beamer, Libbey Gollhofer, Jamie Redman and Caroline Tripp, Sacajawea; Brian Emtman, Morwan Osman, Abby Sarkar and Mu Sun, Lincoln Middle School.

The top-scoring students from each school are: Joe Parisot, Cataldo Catholic School; Josh Larson, Centennial Middle School; Matt Mossman, Northwood Middle School; Minh-An Nguyen, Glover Middle School; David Kahn, Lincoln Middle School; Justin Clark, Orient Middle School; Michael Connelly, Sacajawea Middle School; Aaron May, Spokane Lutheran School; Brian Johnson, St. Aloysius School; Chris Halvorson, St. George’s School; Cassie Merryman, St. Mary’s School; and Tom Meloche, Trinity Catholic School.

The 16 students who earned the highest scores are listed in order of placing: Chris Halvorson, David Kahn, Aaron DeFeyter, Charles Adams of St. George’s School, Minh-An Nguyen, Michael Connelly, Mark Charyk, Liyang Chen, Caitlin Connelly, Dylan Kitzan of Glover Middle School, Josh Zhang, Sarah Jackson of St. George’s School, Sam Shin, Christa Kirby of St. George’s School, Lili Kellman and Chad Tang.

Gina LaBrosse graduated from the Border Patrol Training Academy in Charleston, S.C., and has been assigned to the Laredo, Texas, Border Patrol Sector.

LaBrosse, a 1985 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, is the daughter of Clark and Maria LaBrosse, Spokane.

Troy Getz, a member of Boy Scouts Troop 420, has earned his Eagle Scout, the highest rank awarded in Boy Scouts of America.

For his Eagle project, Getz made and installed a bench seating arrangement for the lobby of the Spokane County Animal Shelter. He erected a flag pole in the Pet Lovers Activity Yard at the shelter, and raised monies through private and service club donations for the purchase of a pet dryer.

Getz, a senior at University High School, is the son of Gary and Marlene Getz, Spokane.
