Alphonsie Lux Spokane

Funeral Mass for Alphonsie Lux, 89, will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Peter Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lux, who was born in Shoshone, Idaho, died Tuesday.

She graduated from the Mount Angel (Ore.) Academy and completed a two-year course in teaching at Mount Angel Normal School.

In 1932 she received a bachelor’s degree from Marylhurst College in Oregon, and received a master’s degree in classical languages from the University of Idaho in 1933.

In 1934 she married Joe Lux, and they farmed in the Nezperce, Idaho, area for many years before moving to Spokane in 1950.

Mrs. Lux was a member of the Parent Teacher Association at Sacred Heart, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Holy Names Academy and Gonzaga Prep. She was president of the Philomathea at Gonzaga Prep and was a member of St. Peter’s Altar Society and Spokane Country Club, and served as vice president of the Nezperce Railroad.

She also was an active sponsor for many charitable organizations, including the Women’s Guild for St. Margaret’s Hall, Morning Star Boys Ranch, St. Gertrude’s Convent in Cottonwood, Idaho, and St. Anthony School in Nezperce.

Her husband died in April.

Survivors include three sons, Edward Lux of Nezperce, Richard Lux of Florida and Larry Lux of Washington state; six daughters, Barbara Lux of California, Marilyn Mauk of Virginia, Marjorie Lux of New Mexico, Virginia Alexander of Alaska, Anita Cooper of Nebraska and Sandra Lux of Washington; a brother, Al Braun of California; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Susan Monroe Spokane

Memorial service for Susan B. Monroe, 80, is planned for 9 a.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home.

A 51-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Monroe died Feb. 22. She was born in Claremont, N.H.

Mrs. Monroe was a mill worker in the lumber industry.

There are no immediate surviving family members.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wishing Star Foundation.

Vera White Gig Harbor, Wash.

Memorial service for Vera White, a former Spokane resident, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church in Spokane. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. White, who was born in Hannaford, N.D., died Tuesday. She was 84.

She graduated from high school in Chicago and worked for various retail stores.

Mrs. White retired from Skaggs at Northtown in 1975.

She was a member of Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church and the Lighthouse Circle.

Her husband, Wayne, preceded her in death.

She moved to Gig Harbor a short time ago to be closer to family.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Reyier of Gig Harbor; two stepsons, Marvin White of Clarkston, Wash., and Dee White of California; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Olive Hoover Spokane

Funeral Mass for Olive L. Hoover, 102, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hoover, who died Tuesday, was born in Boise.

She was a longtime Spokane resident and worked as a telephone operator for Pacific Northwest Bell.

Mrs. Hoover was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and Altar Society.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Hoover of Spokane and Delbert Hoover of Federal Way, Wash.; two daughters, Patricia Dumais of Spokane and Peggy Walls of Veradale; 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gonzaga Preparatory School or Morning Star Boys Ranch.

Sharon Erdman Deer Park

Funeral for Sharon Lynn Erdman, 56, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Tri-County Christian Center in Deer Park. Private burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

A longtime Deer Park resident, Mrs. Erdman died Tuesday. She was born in Craigmont, Idaho.

She graduated from Rogers High School in 1960 and attended Spokane Community College.

In 1962 she married Mervin Edrman.

Mrs. Erdman worked as a draftsman and mechanical engineer. She was employed at Hanford Atomic Works and at Simplex in Spokane.

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church and the Tri-County Christian Center in Deer Park.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Michael Erdman of Spokane and Patrick Erdman of Deer Park; two stepdaughters, Janis Steinbach of Chewelah, Wash., and Karen Locosty of Olympia; three brothers, Gail Anderson of Spokane, Jerry Anderson of Deer Park and Loren Anderson of Everett; four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Spokane.

Alan Stirling Spokane

Funeral for Alan K. Stirling, 83, will be at 10 a.m. today at HennesseySmith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

A 45-year Spokane resident, Mr. Stirling died Monday. He was born in Oroville, Wash.

He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and later joined the 161st Infantry of the Washington National Guard.

Mr. Stirling worked for Western Fruit Express Co. for several years.

He was an amateur artist and painter, a fly fisherman and a well-known fly tier in the Spokane area.

Mr. Stirling was a member of the Wilderness Society, Greenpeace, Hillyard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474 and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include a brother, Charles Stirling of Canby, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Humane Society.

Richard Stone Spokane

Memorial service for Richard B. Stone, 86, will be at 3 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Stone, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Wednesday.

In 1932 he married Lurene Balsiger.

He served with the Navy during World War II as an electrician with the Seabees.

He was a 70-year Spokane resident and retired from working for the railroad. He also worked as a custodian at Holy Family Hospital.

Mr. Stone owned and operated many businesses, including the Diamond Lake Resort, Pine Lodge Motel on Sunset Highway, The Little Store on East Wabash in Hillyard and Bantam Food Shop on East Sprague.

He was a member of the Hillyard Masonic Lodge 133 and member and past patron of the Order of Eastern Star Ivanhoe Chapter 80.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kenneth and Douglas Stone, both of Spokane; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church.

Herman Koppe Spokane

Private memorial service for Herman H. Koppe, 93, will be Saturday. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Koppe, who was born in Moline, Ill., died Tuesday.

He graduated from Chewelah (Wash.) High School and in 1927 moved to Spokane.

Mr. Koppe worked for the Postal Service, before retiring as an assistant supervisor at the downtown post office in 1966.

He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Banister of Clayton, Wash.; a son, Richard Koppe of Fox Island, Wash.; several brothers and sisters, and five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Helena Crysler Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Helena G. Crysler, 92, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ in Newport. Private burial will be at the Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

An 80-year Pend Oreille County resident, Mrs. Crysler died Monday. She was born in Monroe, Wash.

In 1927 she married Leo Crysler.

She worked for the Interstate Telephone Co., which later became GTE. She retired as a chief operator in the late 1970s.

Her husband died in 1990.

Mrs. Crysler is survived by two daughters, Alice Warner of Newport and Elaine Bretthauer of Priest River, Idaho; five grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Loren Woody Connell, Wash.

Graveside service for Loren S. Woody, 80, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View Cemetery in Connell. Funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at Connell United Methodist Church. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Connell resident and area farmer, Mr. Woody died Tuesday.

He served as president of the Franklin County Grain Growers and was a member of the Connell Grange, Washington State Association of Wheat Growers, Connell United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Marcelle; a daughter, Barbara Palanio of Deer Park; a son, Stanley Woody of Newport, Wash.; three stepsons, Larry Bafus of Pasco, Roger Bafus of Moscow, Idaho, and Craig Bafus of Bellevue, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Vicki Adams of Spokane; two sisters, Letha Smith of Colbert and Helen Heideman of Ione, Ore.; four grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Connell United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Esther Stammerjohan Spokane

Visitation for Esther M. Stammerjohan, 95, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A lifetime Spokane, resident, Mrs. Stammerjohan died Tuesday.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Rudolph, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, John Stammerjohan of Spokane; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Susan (Hume) Moore Spokane

Funeral for Susan (Hume) Moore, 54, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fortine (Mont.) Community Church. Burial will be at the Fortine Cemetery. Nelson and Vial Funeral Home in Libby, Mont., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Moore, who was born in Eureka, Mont., died Monday.

She grew up and attended schools in Eureka and Libby before moving to Troy, Mont., in 1959.

Mrs. Moore moved to Spokane and worked in the home health care industry as a certified nurse’s aide for 25 years.

Survivors include two sons, Elbert and Chester Moore, both of Spokane; three daughters, Cindy Eldred and June Moore, both of Spokane, and Lorena Best of Claremont, Calif.; two sisters, Judy Varnell of Woodward, Ore., and Donna Boyd of Libby; two brothers, Russell Hume of Spokane and Wally Hume of Missouri; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Inez Thiringer Forest Grove, Ore.

Funeral for Inez Genevieve Thiringer, 91, was Feb. 3 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cornelius, Ore. Born in Ritzville, Wash., Mrs. Thiringer died Jan. 30.

She owned and operated the White Swan Restaurant in Spokane for many years.

Mrs. Thiringer was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran churches in Spokane and Cornelius. She also had served as a Cub Scout den mother and a room mother at her children’s school.

Mrs. Thiringer moved to the Forest Grove area in the late 1980s.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Henry; a son, Sheridan Thiringer of Vernonia, Ore.; a stepson, Justin Serley of Seattle; and three grandchildren.
