Can They Do Stunts?
Slice reader Diane Lenier sent a snapshot of two of her pals who got engaged on Valentine’s Day.
She is convinced the pair - Sandy Rodrique and Gerry Manfred - are dead ringers for Ross and Rachel of TV’s “Friends.”
You make the call.
* Crime of fashion: We were at a newsstand waiting in a short line to buy a newspaper. A twentysomething guy up ahead was wearing brown corduroy shorts over some sort of black long johns. (A Nordic skiing outfit?) He disdainfully noted some cherry cigarettes displayed by the cash register. Then he turned into a living magazine ad. “If you’re going to smoke, smoke unfiltered Camels,” he said. “If you’re going to drink coffee, take it black.”
Yours truly made eye contact with a woman in line. Chances are, we had the same thought:
“If you’re going to wear pants, wear real ones.”
* One way in which the Spokane market takes a back seat to no city: Tadashi Osborne wonders if anyone else has noticed how often “Matlock” reruns air here.
* This kid must be a fan of TV reporter Tobby Hatley: Andy Moore, 7, was playing with Doby the Beanie Baby Doberman when he came up with this.
“Knock knock.”
“Who’s there?”
“Doby.”
“Doby who?”
“Doby Hatley.”
* The kind of stuff people actually talk about: “My sister, Teresa, wrote a check at Safeway for the amount of $38.38,” wrote Mark Tarr. “Then the checker pointed out the check number, 3838. I wonder how often that happens?”
* Aging process: One of Chuck and Nancy Johnson’s twin 5-year-old granddaughters recently asked a tough one: “How do you know when you’re old?”
That’s pretty subjective. But here’s one definition: You know you’re old when nobody else in the room remembers when comic books cost 12 cents and tomatoes had actual flavor.
* Sounds of home: Long ago, after Marion Lillie’s Army family moved to Germany, it was several weeks before the household goods caught up with them. And one often-repeated question during that period was “Do you feel at home yet?”
Lillie’s 4-year-old daughter had to say she didn’t. Until, that is, some appliances arrived and she became aware that her mom was using the mixer. “I heard that,” the little girl said, running into the kitchen. “Now we’re home!”
* Today’s Slice question: Which state capital is the one you could never remember?
