Gu Team Takes Second In Engineering Contest

Paula Schmitz, Christopher Dorrington and Travis Garvey, mechanical engineering students at Gonzaga University, received second place in the Safety Engineering and Risk Analysis Division/American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health’s 1996-97 Student Safety Contest.

They each received $200 at an awards ceremony in Anaheim, Calif.

Eight students from All Saints Catholic School are eligible for the Johns Hopkins Talent Search, which allows seventh-grade students to take the SAT test with high school juniors and seniors.

The students, Dan Cronin, Aaron Curry, Taylor Hamby, Fred Hole, Colin Johnson, Anne Maloney, Bernie Rihn and Anne Schroeder qualified after scoring in the 97th percentile or above on last year’s nationwide Iowa Basic Skills Test.

Travis Fischer, Spokane, has earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering and chemical engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is the son of Suzie and Rick Fischer of Spokane.

Army Pvts. David A. Holdridge, Jason R. Schrader and Jeremiah L. Sells graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

Holdridge is the son of Margaret Holdridge and William Holdridge, both of Spokane, and is a 1998 graduate of Mead High School.

Schrader is the son of Christine and Richard Schrader of Spokane and is a 1998 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Sells is the son of Dena and Ron Suiter of Otis Orchards.

Three Inland Northwest students graduated last summer from Central Washington University in Ellensburg.

The students, their hometowns and degrees are: Shelley Hogenhout of Liberty Lake, foreign language; Jason Frederick of Newport, Wash., history and teaching; and Edward Seibert of Spokane, individual studies.
