Spotlight: Backcountry Skiing

If you like to hike or ski the backcountry during the winter, there are a couple of classes coming up that should interest you.

Jan. 26 and 30, Outdoor Expeditions will conduct a backcountry ski class for ages 14 and older through REI. It will include basic powder skiing, avalanche dangers and beginning telemark. Cost is $25 for REI members, $30 for nonmembers. Info: 328-9900.

Feb. 26-27, Peak Adventures will offer an avalanche awareness course through Mountain Gear. An evening indoor session will be at Mountain Gear followed by an on-snow session at Cataldo, Idaho. Cost is $150. Info: 325-9000.
