REPLAY: 1-22-99; C2 Basketball standout Ali Johnston has moved from Pullman to Claremont, Calif., and her mother is the dean of the veterinary school at Cal Poly Pomona. The city and school were misidentified on Thursday’s Washington prep page.

A basketball team such as the Brewster Bears of 1975-77 comes around maybe once a generation.

The second generation has arrived.

Brewster (13-1) is ranked No. 1 among Class 1A boys in the Associated Press poll. The Bears’ lone loss came against Blaine (12-0), the top-ranked 2A team.

Four of Brewster’s five starters are sons of Roger Boesel and Mac Gebbers, key ingredients when Brewster cooked up a state-record 82 consecutive wins in the ‘70s.

Seniors Johnny Gebbers and Brice Boesel, along with sophomores Daniel Gebbers and Dustin Boesel have made the season blissful for coach Tim Taylor. The Bears coach is married to Mac Gebbers’ sister.

Gebbers and Roger Boesel coached this group in elementary school and in AAU tournaments. Gebbers played for Brewster until midway through his junior season, when he transferred to Wenatchee High.

“We were 12-0 at the time,” said Gebbers, who later played baseball at Gonzaga University. “We’d already won the state tournament once and we were crushing everyone. The games weren’t in doubt.”

Greyhounds lose shot-blocker

Ali Johnston played her final game for Pullman last Friday.

Johnston, a 6-foot-1 sophomore post player, moved to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to join her mother after a four-month separation. Her mother is the new dean of Cal Poly SLO’s veterinary school.

Johnston had 200 blocked shots in less than 40 games with Pullman. She was averaging eight points per game this year, similar to what she averaged in helping Pullman take fifth place at last year’s State 2A Tournament. Pullman is ranked No. 5 in the latest AP poll.

Pullman coach Jack Brossman started working in replacements for Johnston over the holidays.

GNL gets serious

Lakeside’s girls (10-0) will put their 34-game winning streak on the line Friday night at Newport (10-0).

Newport has more experience, with six seniors compared to Lakeside’s one. But Lakeside has had the upper hand the last four years, winning all eight of its games against the Grizzlies.
