Osu Ends Long Skid Vs. Ducks
Pac-10
Jason Heide scored 13 points and Clifton Jones had 10 rebounds and six blocks as Oregon State held off Oregon 48-45 Saturday night, giving the Beavers their first win over their intrastate rival in 11 tries.
Terik Brown made one of two free throws to pull the Ducks within 46-45 with 1:09 remaining. But after Deaundra Tanner’s two free throws for OSU, Oregon missed three consecutive shots.
Oregon State’s Ramunas Petraitis came up with the rebound and was fouled. He missed both shots from the line with 10.4 seconds left, but the Ducks’ failed on their last chance as Brown’s 3-pointer went off the iron.
For the fifth straight game, Oregon State students poured onto the court, celebrating the 10th straight home win for the Beavers (11-7, 5-4).
Brown had 16 points, all in the second half, to lead the Ducks (10-8, 2-7).
The Beavers blocked 10 shots, tying a school record matched earlier this season. Jones’ six blocks also tied a school record held by several players.
Oregon State led 27-16 at the half and built the lead to 34-19 on a putback by Jones with 17:13 left in the game.
However, the Ducks came back with a 20-4 run over the next 7 minutes. A layup by A.D. Smith put the Ducks ahead 39-38 with 8:15 to go.
A layup and a 3-pointer by Tanner put the Beavers back in front 43-39 with 6:03 to play. A basket and a foul shot by Heide made it 46-42 with 4:14 to go.
After that, Oregon missed five of six free throws and didn’t make another field goal.

(3) Stanford 73, Arizona St. 63
Stanford, in serious danger of losing for the second time in three nights, turned to defense to salvage a victory at Tempe, Ariz.
Peter Sauer had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Kris Weems and Arthur Lee added 12 points apiece as the Cardinal (18-3, 8-1 Pac-10) sputtered offensively most of the game.
But tough defense during a late 16-0 run and a huge advantage at the freethrow line pulled the game out for Stanford, which had lost its first conference game and had its 13-game winning streak snapped in a 78-76 loss at Arizona on Thursday night.
Eddie House scored 25 and Mike Batiste 21 for Arizona State (12-9, 4-5) but House managed only nine and Batiste five in the second half.
Arizona State led 56-50 with 10:42 to play but didn’t score for the next 8:22, committing five consecutive turnovers during one stretch.
Stanford, meanwhile, scored 16 in a row to build a 66-56 lead with 2:11 left. Jarron Collins had five points, including a three-point play, in the run and Arthur Lee capped the outburst with two free throws.
