Obituaries

John “Jack” Beal Cusick, Wash.

Visitation for John C. `Jack’ Beal, 67, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Beal, who was born in Round Lake, Minn., died Sunday.

He moved to Spokane in 1942, and graduated from North Central High School andthe School of Pharmacy at Washington State College. He was a member of the Rho Chi Epsilon Honor Society and the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at the college.

In 1951 he married Beverly Timmers.

He worked as a pharmaceutical representative for Merk, Sharpe and Dohme, and in 1966, was promoted to senior professional representative. In 1977 he was promoted to the position of executive professional representative. He was awarded the Vice President Club Award in 1980, 1981 and 1987 for having the No. 1 territory in his district.

After 32 years of service, he retired in 1991, and he and his wife built a home on the Pend Oreille River.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Katherine Brown of Chattaroy, Marjorie Castle of Longview, Wash., and Mary Sue Beal and Jackie Beal-Conley, both of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Beverly Williams of Cusick; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or to the American Cancer Society.

Lucille Taylor Spokane

Visitation for Lucille E. Taylor, 85, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Funeral is planned for noon Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Elk (Wash.) Cemetery No. 2.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Taylor died Saturday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1931 and from Kinman Business University.

Mrs. Taylor taught piano, accordion and the organ for 50 years.

Her band, the Gay Rancheros, played for 30 years at Spokane area locations, including the Dutch Mill at the Coeur d’Alene Hotel.

Mrs. Taylor worked as a clerk at Geiger Field during World War II and later as a cook for Fidelity Mutual Savings Bank in Spokane.

She was a lifetime member of the Musicians Union and a member of the Royal Neighbors.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Richard; three sons, Val Jean Thurmon of Bremerton, and Finley and Randall Taylor, both of Spokane; two stepdaughters, Chiquita Boucher of Winter Park, Fla., and Candice Taylor of Tampa, Fla.; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Laura Reynolds Batterson Salem, Ore.

Service for Laura Alma Reynolds Batterson, 88, was held Wednesday at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home. Burial followed at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Batterson, who was born in Oklahoma, died June 30.

She lived in Oklahoma and moved to the Grouse Creek area near Sandpoint as a child.

Mrs. Batterson married Clarence Reynolds in 1928, and they lived in Sandpoint. They moved to Dalton Gardens, Idaho, in 1953, and she worked at GTE until her retirement. Her husband preceded her in death.

She wintered in Arizona, and traveled to Japan and Hawaii.

In 1981 she married Leonard Batterson, and they lived in Selah, Wash. He died in 1994.

Mrs. Batterson moved to Salem in 1998.

She had been a member of the New Hope Church in Yakima, Wash., and was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Square Dance Club and the Sandpoint Chatter Bees Sewing Club.

Survivors include a son, Maurice Reynolds of Snoqualmie, Wash.; a daughter, Margaret Redcrow of Dalton Gardens; three stepsons, Albert Batterson of Puyallup, Wash., Kenneth Batterson of Selah and Marion Batterson of Salem; four brothers, Leonard Saunders of Ephrata, Wash., Oliver Saunders of Riverside, Wash., Mack Saunders of Tillamook, Ore., and Gene Saunders of Sandpoint; a sister, Vera Kom of Coeur d’Alene; 10 grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nine stepgreat-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.

Delbert Mather Otis Orchards

Memorial service for Delbert L. Mather, 68, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. First Choice Cremation is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mather, who was born and raised in Sidney, Iowa, died Saturday.

He served with the Air Force for 20 years and moved to Spokane in 1968.

Mr. Mather worked for American Sign and Indicator in Spokane for 15 years.

He was a member of the Spokane Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Lillian; two daughters, Debra Crider and Carol Kinzebach, and a son, Donald Mather, all of Spokane; two brothers, Lloyd and Floyd Mather, both of Lincoln, Neb.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Naida Albertson Spokane

Graveside service for Naida E. Albertson, 82, was held at the Bethany Cemetery in Warren, Ore. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Albertson, who was born and raised in Portland, died June 23.

She graduated from high school in Portland, and in 1945, married Gus Albertson.

Mrs. Albertson worked in the shipyards in Portland during World War II and later was a homemaker.

She moved to Spokane in 1980. Her husband died in 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Marian Adopolus of Oregon; four sons, Darrell Waterman and Gary Albertson, both of Portland, Fred Albertson of Spokane and David Albertson of Marshall; three sisters, 28 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Lucille Fisk Spokane

Memorial service for Lucille G. “Lou” Fisk, 81, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Fisk, who was born in Malden, Wash., died Monday. She was a 65-year Spokane resident.

She worked as a cook and a waitress in a milk store for several years.

Mrs. Fisk was a member of the Spokane Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435 Auxiliary.

Her husband, Donald, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Sydnee Bambino Ose of Mead; two sisters, Minnie Curtis and Ellie Skeen; and three grandchildren.

Charles Yarber Plummer, Idaho

Graveside service for Charles Yarber, a longtime Plummer resident, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Plummer Cemetery. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Yarber, who was born in Colville, Wash., died Sunday. He was 84.

He was a veteran of World War II, and worked as a mechanic and a rural mail carrier for several years.

He was a 51-year member of the American Legion, was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and served on the Plummer school board for 20 years.

Survivors include two nephews, Jim Schow of Plummer and Mike Schow of Pocatello, Idaho.

Richard Nowaski Spokane

Funeral Mass for Richard R. Nowaski, 74, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. John Vianney Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Trentwood. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nowaski, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

He graduated from West Valley High School and served with the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Nowaski worked at the Naval Supply Depot in the Spokane Valley, and later owned and operated a Shell Oil station on North Division for several years. He also worked at several car dealerships as a service manager. He retired from Haskin Steel in 1989.

Mr. Nowaski was a member of St. John Vianney Church and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include three sons, Richard, Ronald and Randall Nowaski, and a daughter, Debra Clemens, all of Spokane; a brother, Joe Nowaski of Durham, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Brask of Spokane; and nine grandchildren.

Julius Spatafore Spokane

Burial for Julius F. Spatafore, 89, was held at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A longtime Spokane resident, Mr. Spatafore died Saturday. He was born in Colbert.

Mr. Spatafore worked in maintenance for a local school district.

Survivors include a daughter, Dolores Mack of Dana Pointe, Calif.; a sister, Ange Grandinette of Spokane; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mark Meyers Spokane

Funeral for Mark B. Meyers, Ph.D., 45, will be at 2 p.m. today in the Sunset Chapel on the grounds of Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 15-year Spokane resident, Mr. Meyers was born in Evanston, Ill. He died Saturday.

He worked as a pharmacist for several years.

Mr. Meyers was a member of the Spokane Gun Club.

Survivors include his wife, Valerie; two sons, Jason and Trevor Meyers, both of Spokane; and his mother, Trudy Meyers of Laguna Woods, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital For Children.

Fern (Nelson) Cleveland Spokane

Funeral for Fern Maxine (Nelson) Cleveland, 79, will be at noon today in the Sunset Chapel on the grounds of Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cleveland, who was born in Ilo, Idaho, later known as Craigmont, Idaho, died Sunday.

She moved to Spokane in 1955.

Mrs. Cleveland retired from working as a library clerk for Spokane School District 81 in 1981.

She was active with the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Her husband, Bob, died in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Teri Boyatt of Riverside, Calif.; two sons, Daryl Cleveland of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Dale Cleveland of Valleyford, Wash.; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

June Roecks Othello, Wash.

Funeral for June Marie Roecks, 61, will be at 1 p.m. today at Stevens Funeral Chapel in Othello. Graveside service will be Friday at Pines Cemetery in Spokane.

Mrs. Roecks, who was born in Spokane, died July 2.

She grew up in the Palouse, Wash., area, and in 1956 married her high school sweetheart, Duane Roecks. They raised their family in Fairfield, eventually moving to the Royal Slope area in 1978.

Mrs. Roecks battled with multiple sclerosis for 35 years.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Dale Roecks of Othello; a daughter, Julane Williams of Hendersonville, N.C.; and one granddaughter.

Erleen Williams Spokane

Memorial service for Erleen Williams, 94, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Rockwood Manor. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Williams, who was born in Taylor, Mo., died Monday.

She married David Williams, the former owner of KSPO radio in Spokane, in 1932. He died in 1964.

Mrs. Williams was a teacher for several years.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Genealogical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Nile and the College Women’s Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Kenlynn Gilbert of Bellevue, Wash.; and three grandsons.

Elsie Holt Spokane

Funeral for Elsie A. Holt, 76, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Holt, who was born in Pasco, died Monday.

A Spokane resident since 1941, she retired from working as a housekeeper at Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Ardene Patten of Spokane; a sister, Mildred Pierce of Othello, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Evelyn Springgate Spokane

Graveside service for Evelyn Springgate, a longtime Spokane resident, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Riverside Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Springgate, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday. She was 90.

She worked in retail sales for a department store for several years.

She was a longtime member of the Lidgerwood Evangelical Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Berlanga of El Cajon, Calif.; two grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Roger Williams Tacoma

No service will be held for Roger V. Williams, 92, at his request.

Mr. Williams, who was born in Spokane, died June 30.

He graduated from Washington State College and served with Army Air Corps. Mr. Williams retired as a colonel from the Air Force in 1954.

Mr. Williams lived in Sandpoint for a few years, and then in Worley, Idaho, for 29 years. He moved to Tacoma a short time ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Diana Lilje of Vashon, Wash.; five grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
