Spokane Athletic drew first blood in dramatic fashion when the Junior American Legion baseball championship series opened Tuesday night at Jackson Field.
Spokane Athletic scored seven runs in the first inning and the South Division champs went on to trounce the Panorama Twins 10-0 in the opening game of their best-of-3 series.
Tyson Fitterer slammed three straight hits, including a double, and drove in two runs to highlight a nine-hit attack for the team of Central Valley High School players.
Winning pitcher Jay Pearson allowed five hits in the game which was abbreviated to five innings.
Game 2 is scheduled for tonight.
Brian Crowder had three singles and Josh Shelton and Brandon Florence homered as the Cannons slipped by the Bandits 5-4 in the first game of the Senior Legion series at Jackson Field.
The Cannons broke a 4-4 tie with a single run in the seventh inning after the Bandits had overcome a 4-0 deficit.
Jeff Crouch doubled and singled for the Bandits.
The series continues tonight.
Golf
Thomas Colon, from Indian Canyon Golf Course, shot a 74 for a total of 145 to earn $185 as the Pacific Northwest PGA Assistants Championship ended at Tumwater Valley Golf Club in Tumwater, Wash.
Bill Porter of Lakeview Country Club in Quincy, riding the crest of several recent successes, won a onehole playoff from Byron Patton of Portland to win first money of $1,099. Porter put together back-toback rounds of 68 for 136. Patton skidded to 72 after opening with a 64.
