Gosch Iel Baseball’S Top Player

Coeur d’Alene High pitcher Kirk Gosch was named the Inland Empire League’s player of the year by a vote of the coaches.

Gosch (8-2), a senior, led CdA to the league and regional titles. The Vikings went on to place third at state.

Gosch was joined on the first team by three teammates: Junior first baseman Robert Green, junior pitcher Ryan Holland and senior outfielder Rob Crain.

CdA coach Brian Holgate was named coach of the year.

Other players named to the first team were senior Sean Moglia (pitcher/second base) and senior Jasper Graham (outfielder) of Lake City; senior Matt Schrag (designated hitter) and senior Andy Mikles (pitcher) of Post Falls; senior Jens Weiden (pitcher) of Sandpoint, and senior Scott Wimer (catcher), sophomore Nate Martin (third base) and sophomore Neil Litchfield (outfielder) of Lewiston.

Intermountain League coaches have announced their all-league team.

League champ Lakeland had five players selected to the team. They are senior outfielder Bryan Phelps, senior first baseman Taylor Skidmore, senior third baseman Chase Williams, junior pitcher Mike Banks and senior catcher Dan Dockter.

Others named to the team were senior outfielder Justin Anderson, senior second baseman Colin Gause and senior pitcher Todd Bateman of Bonners Ferry; senior outfielder Adam Rouse and junior shortstop Don Cypher of Timberlake, and junior utility player Trent Duffey of St. Maries.

Soccer

Two Coeur d’Alene Sting soccer teams captured titles at the State Cup last weekend in Boise.

The Sting U-19 girls team defeated Idaho Falls Rage 1-0 in the championship final. Hayley Shortridge scored with 5 minutes left to lift the Sting to victory.

Kathy Cottrel was in goal for the Sting. The U-19 team went 3-0 in the tournament. Janee Andre stood out in the team’s earlier wins.

Most of the U-19 players were members of the team that won the state title last year.

The Sting U-18 boys also captured gold, whipping the Boise Nationals 4-1. Carmine Terracciano scored twice and Joey Davis had two assists for the winners. They went 4-0 in the tourney.

Most of the players on the U-18 team also played on the U-16 team that won a state title last year.

Eight of the U-18 boys played on Lake City High’s State A-1 championship team last fall. The team is co-coached by Sting director Bill Eisenwinter and LC coach Jim Facciano.

The Sting champs both qualified for the Far West Regionals June 20-27 in Bakersfield, Calif.

The Sting U-16 boys lost 2-1 to the Boise Capitals in a state final. The team went 3-1 in the tourney.

The Sandpoint Strikers had a boys and girls team play for state titles. The Sandpoint U-19 boys lost to the Boise Capitals 1-0 while the Sandpoint U-18 girls fell to the Boise Capitals 2-1.

Signers

Lake City soccer standout Connor Quinn (midfielder) has signed a letter of intent to play at Gonzaga University.

Quinn helped lead LC to the State A-1 championship last fall.

Three other LC players also are going to continue their soccer careers.

Carmine Terracciano (forward), Philimon Tudor (forward) and Brandon Bemis (goalie) will play for North Idaho College’s first men’s club team.

Sam Stroh (midfielder) has enrolled at the University of Nebraska, where he hopes to walk on as a placekicker.

Two other Timberwolves, Taylor Facciano and J.J. Barlow, are going to Idaho and Washington State, respectively. They won’t be playing collegiate athletics.

LC girls basketball players Laura Dodge and Kellie Stern also have made college plans.

Dodge is headed to Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. Stern is planning to walk on at the University of Montana and play volleyball.

Falls Christian basketball standout Jared Bligh plans to walk on at North Idaho College.
