Blue Jays Pick Cda Ace
Coeur d’Alene High School star Kirk Gosch was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday as major league baseball teams completed their annual amateur draft.
Gosch, a left-handed pitcher who also excelled with the bat, was the 853rd player chosen in the two-day process, which included 50 rounds. The Hayden Lake resident went in the 28th round.
The New York Mets picked Gonzaga University pitcher Steve Bennett, a right-hander from Helena, in the same round. Bennett’s GU teammate, slugging infielder Bo Hart, went to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 33rd round.
In the 37th round, the Cincinnati Reds chose outfielder Jerymane Beasley of Kennewick, a student at Eastern Washington University, which does not field an intercollegiate team.
Gosch was named Inland Empire League player of the year after leading Coeur d’Alene to league and regional championships. This spring, he posted an 8-2 pitching record and batted close to .500.
Bennett was Gonzaga’s ace, putting together a 6-1 record with a 2.95 earned run average. He struck out 62 in 64 innings. Hart, from Capitola, Calif., started all 52 games and batted .308 with 13 home runs.
Golf
Ryan Camp was looking for a little redemption after his 10th-place finish at this spring’s State 4A golf tournament.
The Ferris junior got it six days later.
Camp, 17, shot a 2-over-par 218 to win the boys 15-19 division at the Maxfli Junior Players Championship from May 28-31 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
He shot a 70 in the second round on the par-72, 6,676-yard TPC-Valley Course.
Lewis and Clark junior Bill Witte tied for 52nd with a 240 and Mt. Spokane junior Matt Kodama shot a 250 to tie for 77th.
