Hatley Nabs Golf Crown In Playoff
Former Ferris High School standout Reid Hatley made par on the second playoff hole Thursday to win the Compaq Junior golf championship at Trophy Lake Golf and Casting in Port Orchard.
Hatley, who will play collegiately at Arizona this fall, fired a final-round score of 3-over-par 75 to finish regulation play in the 54-hole American Junior Golf Association event at 3-over 219. That was good enough to tie Thomas Park, from Vancouver, British Columbia, and force a playoff.
Both players parred the first playoff hole, but Park bogied the second, ending a head-to-head battle that had been waged most of the afternoon.
“The whole back nine was basically match play,” said Hatley, who held a one-stroke lead over Park entering the final round. “Today I played some of the most solid golf I’ve played all tournament.”
Several other Spokane golfers faired well in the event, which was contested over a challenging 6,773-yard Trophy Lake layout. Ryan Camp, Hatley’s teammate at Ferris, finished in a three-way tie for seventh at 227, and Bill Witte shot 235 to finish in a seven-way tie for 23rd that included Cheney’s Peter Sisich.
Matt Kodama finished at 237 and Galen Satterlee at 255.
Spokane’s Michelle Grafos shot a final-round 89 to finish tied for 37th in the girls division at 253 - 31 strokes behind runaway champion Erica Blasberg, from Corona, Calif.
Dan Potter of Coeur d’Alene shot a 2-under-par 70 in the third and final round of the Nabisco Mission Hills Desert Junior tournament in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and leapfrogged a host of contenders to finish in a tie for 28th place in the American Junior Golf Association event.
Potter, after opening with rounds of 78 and 77, finished with a 54-hole total of 9-over 225, the same as Spokane’s Cory Prugh, who shot rounds of 73-77-75 at Mission Hills Country Club.
David Oh of Cerritos, Calif., won the boys title with a score of 211. Angela Rho of Fullerton, Calif., shot 213 to capture the girls title.
