New Idaho Catholic Bishop
Pope John Paul II has named the Rev. Michael Driscoll as bishop of Idaho’s 120,000 Catholics.
Driscoll will be installed during a special Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral at Eighth and Hayes in Boise. An evening prayer service will begin at 7:30 in the cathedral.
The Mass will include some of the language and cultural rituals of Idaho’s Catholic Hispanic, Basque, Native American, Vietnamese and Portuguese communities.
Driscoll, 59, has served as auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Orange, Calif., since 1989. He is Idaho’s seventh bishop.
In the week following his installation, Driscoll will preside over five Masses throughout the state to meet with area Catholics unable to attend the installation.
He will celebrate Mass at 7 p.m. March 26 at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 625 E. Haycraft in Coeur d’Alene. and will be in the Seaport Ballroom of the Red Lion Hotel in Lewiston at 7:30 p.m. March 25.
Seder celebration
The Messianic Jewish Fellowship of Spokane will host a Seder meal in the Ridpath Hotel at 4:30 p.m. on April 1.
The traditional Messianic Seder celebration will also include worship and a reading of the Haggadah.
Child care for those up to 8 years old will be available at $1 per child per hour. The event is $25.

Synodical Women’s Gathering
Diana Lim, moderator for National Presbyterian Women, will be guest speaker for the Synodical Women’s Gathering April 8 to 10 at First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar.
The Synod of Alaska-Northwest includes 273 churches.
Workshop topics will include mental health, addictions, aging, laughter and meditation, caregiving and violence against women.

Wayne Watson in concert
Contemporary Christian singer Wayne Watson will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at Fourth Memorial Church, 2000 N. Standard.
Watson’s “For Such a Time As This” was named No. 1 inspirational song for 1998 by Contemporary Christian Music magazine. He has won several Dove awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year, and was nominated for 16 others.
He also has three Grammy nominations.
Watson’s latest release is “The Way Home.”

Baha’i new year
Members of the Baha’i Faith in Spokane will celebrate their new year, or Naw-Ruz, on March 21. Baha’i follows the solar calendar and celebrates the new year on the vernal equinox.
A dinner and dance will be at 5:30 p.m. next Saturday at the Corbin Community Center, 827 W. Cleveland, to celebrate the event. (326-0152)
Flannery Lecture at GU
Gonzaga University will host its annual Flannery Lecture at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Spokane Room of the COG, the student uniion building at GU. Lisa Sowle Cahill will deliver the lecture, “Families, Christian Ethics and the Common Good.”
Cahill, a professor at Boston College, is author of “Sex, Gender and Christian Ethics” and “Women and Sexuality,” as well as over 100 essays. She is now writing a book, “Family: A Christian Social Perspective.”
The free lecture is open to the public. A reception will follow.
Poor Clare Tea, Fashion Show
The Poor Clare Sisters will present their annual Tea and Fashion Show March 21. “Fashion Blooms in Spring” will begin at 1 p.m. at the downtown DoubleTree Hotel.
There will also be crafts, ceramics, needlework and baked goods for sale.
Event proceeds will help support the sisters.
Cost: $5; $3 for seniors. Tickets may be purchased at area Roman Catholic churches or by calling 328-7244. Tickets will be available at the door.
`Y2K - The Play’
Back by popular demand is “Y2K - The Play,” presented by the Spokane First Assembly of God Church, 828 W. Indiana. The play’s first run was so well received that organizers are staging four more performances at 6 p.m. Sunday and at 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Admission is free, and the public is welcome. Concert in St. Maries
St. Maries Assembly of God Church presents The Nelons in concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Nelons, based in Georgia, are frequently seen on “Bill Gaither’s Homecoming” videos.
