Hints From Heloise

Dear Heloise: When I cut up old credit cards or credit application letters, I put half in one day’s trash collection and then put the other half in the next pickup day’s. Edna Quiett, La Porte, Texas

Dear Heloise: I use binder clips to seal bags of chips and inner bags in cereal boxes. Just fold over double and clip. Food stays fresher longer, and it’s easier than using twist-ties. A Reader

Dear Heloise: I have found that coffee filters come in handy for use in the microwave for heating small portions in microwave-safe dishes with no top. I just invert a coffee filter over the container. Sure prevents a mess. V.H., Glen Burnie, Md.

Dear Heloise: Instead of using the usual twist-tie to close plastic bags of assorted foods, I favor a clip-type clothespin, as I also do to close the plastic bag for bread. As the bread is used up, I keep cutting the bag down to where the bread is, thus avoiding having to reach a long, long way into the bag to obtain the remaining pieces. - William H. Hutton, Colorado Springs
