Bode Leads Cougs In Slugfest
Zach Bode homered and finished with five runs batted Wednesday to lead Washington State to a 16-11 non-conference baseball win at San Francisco.
Bode had a two-run single and Dusty Edler added a two-run double during a five-run second inning that gave the Cougars (12-5) the lead for good.
Mead High grad Ray Hattenburg added a two-run single during WSU’s four-run third. Hattenburg went 3 for 5 with three RBIs.
Steve Gleason, out of Gonzaga Prep, hit a two-run home run in the fourth for an 11-6 lead. Gleason finished 4 for 5 with two doubles and three runs.
Taggert Bozied of the Dons (9-12-1) had three homers and six RBIs. Bozied has 18 homers this year, No. 2 on USF’s single-season list.
Matt O’Brien (3-1) pitched a perfect seventh and eighth to earn the win for the Cougars.
Track and field
Community Colleges of Spokane decathlete Dusty Lane will take a crack at Dan O’Brien’s school-record point total at the Eastern Washington University Combined Events Invitational.
The two-day decathlon-heptathlon event begins today at 10 a.m.
Olympic gold medalist O’Brien’s record is 7,275. Lane, a sophomore from Cashmere, Wash., scored 6,993 as a freshman. He has orally committed to compete at the University of Alabama next year.
Washington State’s outdoor track and field teams open their season this week with the majority of the teams competing at the annual Big Foot Open at Community College of Spokane. The Saturday meet will begin with field events at 10 a.m. and running at noon.
The annual meet features 580 athletes, a larger number than past year’s since the Tri-Cities Sports Fest folded.
WSU and Eastern will bring several athletes on its men’s teams while Montana, Gonzaga, Idaho and Washington will be represented by a few athletes. WSU, Idaho and Eastern women will be well represented.
WSU distance-running star Bernard Lagat is not entered.
Those competing among the non-Division I schools will be Whitworth, Central Washington, Eastern Oregon, Linfield, Pacific Lutheran and Lewis-Clark State. North Idaho College and Ricks also will be there.
