Cda Knocks Off East Valley In Softball

Coeur d’Alene made every out count during Thursday’s 8-1 non-league softball win at East Valley.

The Vikings scored seven of their runs after two were out. Kari Lenz had a two-out, run-scoring triple in the fourth inning and scored on an infield error.

Winning pitcher Blake Hoorelbeke and Cassandra Vig had three hits apiece for CdA.

Shasta Schwartz’s triple to lead off the seventh, the only hit off Tiffany Hall, helped St. Maries defeat visiting Lakeland 2-1 in a non-leaguer between Intermountain League teams.

Schwartz scored on Essie Nelson’s grounder to the shortstop, tying the game at 1. Pinch-runner Katie Smith moved to third on consecutive sacrifice bunts, then scored on a wild pitch.

Lakeland’s Paige Smith singled and scored on a groundout in the sixth. She had the only hit allowed by winner Nikki Gibson.

Candice Birchell struck out nine and Michelle Adkins scored three times and went 2 for 3 as Cheney defeated visiting Sandpoint 10-1.

Baseball

Bryan Phelps hit a one-out grand slam in the second and visiting Lakeland defeated CdA 9-5 in a non-league game.

Taylor Skidmore added a two-run triple in the fourth for the Hawks. CdA’s Blake Whiteman had a two-run double in the fourth.

Jesse Rinehart’s bases-clearing double in the seventh helped visiting Timberline to a 10-8 non-league win over Lake City.

Lake City had an error to fill the bases for Rinehart. LC had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, but the game ended on a strikeout and pop fly.

Trent Baysinger had a pair of run-scoring singles as visiting Moscow defeated St. Maries 5-3 in a non-leaguer.

Washington

Bret Baker scored twice to lead Riverside to a 4-1 win at Medical Lake in Great Northern League boys soccer.

Baker’s first goal came after a defender failed to clear the ball. His second was on a crossing pass from Wink Hodgson.

Jason Remington also scored for the Rams (1-0), on a shot that Cardinals goalkeeper Ben Whye nearly deflected. ML is 0-2.

Also in the league, Kevin Proszek had three goals and one assist to lead Chewelah (1-0) to an 8-0 win over Lakeside at Nine Mile Falls.

Chewelah defender Martin Lanfer had a major hand in the shutout. The Eagles are 0-1.

Junior midfielder Jared Stark scored on a first-half penalty kick as visiting Deer Park (1-0) notched a 2-0 win over Colville (1-1).
