Ccs Pair Multi-Event Champions

Dusty Lane and Cyndy Edmunds of the Community Colleges of Spokane swept the decathlon and heptathlon Tuesday at the NWAACC Multi-Events Championship at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.

Lane, a sophomore from Cashmere, Wash., scored 7,008 points to win the decathlon with Ben Logan of Lane CC second at 6,796. Tim Marks of CCS was sixth at 6,072. Lane is the school record holder at 7,347.

On the second day of competition, Lane won the 110 high hurdles in 14.78 seconds, placed second in the discus (135 feet), tied for fourth in the pole vault (12-7-1/2), was seventh in the javelin (135-0) and third in the 1,500-meter run (4:43.52).

Edmunds scored 4,381 points to win the heptathlon with Amy Hill of Lane CC next at 4,216. Edmunds, a sophomore from Eastmont, Wash., is the CCS record holder at 4,588.

Edmunds won two of three events - the javelin (120-2) and long jump (17-1-1/4) - on the second day of competition in taking the victory. With a comfortable cushion, she placed 16th, and last, in the final event of the day, the 800, in 2:48.89.

College baseball

CCS scored a pair of one-run victories in sweeping a doubleheader from Yakima Valley College 3-2 and 5-4 at Spokane Falls CC. The Sasquatch are in second place in the NWAACC Eastern Division.

Josh Ervin’s RBI double tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth inning of the seven-inning opener. Keith Thompson’s hit with two outs in the inning provided the winning margin.

George Petticrew pitched a complete game, striking out six and walking three. He didn’t allow an earned run.

In the nine-inning nightcap, a tworun eighth gave the Sasquatch (20-14, 14-10) the victory. Tad Call squeezed home Thompson for the tying run and pinch hitter Brett Haiar drove in the winner with a ground ball.

Kurtis Broderson pitched two shutout innings of relief, striking out three, to pick up his first collegiate victory.

High school soccer

Chris Oyolokor’s goal and three assists helped Cheney to a 10-2 win over visiting Clarkston in the opening round of the District 7 3A boys soccer playoffs.

Cheney (8-9) advances to the second round, a 5 p.m. Thursday match at West Valley (8-6-2). Thursday’s winner must defeat Frontier League champion East Valley twice to qualify for the state playoffs.

Clarkston (1-14) was eliminated.

Eric Hegney added two goals and one assist for Cheney, and Ian Anderson scored twice. Clarkston’s Quince Child had one goal and one assist.

College golf

The CCS women’s golf team placed first in the four-team Columbia Basin Invitational at Canyon Lakes GC in Kennewick. Abbie Stenslend was the top CCS finisher at 175 for third place. CCS had a 536 total for the two-day event.

The CCS men finished third in an 11-team field with Billy Thompson and Randy Potter at 153 and 154 for fourth and fifth places to lead Spokane. Camosun of British Columbia won the team title with Mount Royal’s Andrew Montgomery the medalist at 144.

HOOPFEST OPENINGS AVAILABLE There are still openings available for teams wanting to enter the Hoopfest 3-on-3 basketball tournament June 26-27 in downtown Spokane.
