Golden Anniversary

Monaco’s Prince Rainier III, 75, right, celebrated the 50th anniversary of his coronation on Sunday in Monte Carlo. About 6,000 people turned out for celebrations that began with a Mass and continued with lavish parties, music and fireworks. With tears in his eyes, Rainier called on Monaco’s people to show support for his son, Prince Albert, 41, left. Rainier has promised to abdicate, and although there have been few official clues to when he plans to do so, Rainier said Sunday that Albert is “preparing” for the throne. The Grimaldi family has ruled Monaco since 1297 and is one of Europe’s oldest royal families.
