Rogers, Shadle Earn District Spots
Rogers and Shadle Park rounded out the District 8 4A baseball field Wednesday with victories in the Greater Spokane League’s tie-breaking round at Seafirst Stadium.
Rogers (10-9) earned the No. 5 seed to district by opening with a 5-1 win over North Central. Shadle (11-10) landed the No. 6 spot with a five-inning, 11-1 triumph that eliminated NC (10-12).
All three teams had tied for fifth place in the GSL regular season.
District play opens Friday at Seafirst with two loser-out games. Shadle plays No. 3 Central Valley (12-8) at 1 p.m., and Rogers plays No. 4 Mt. Spokane (10-9) at 3:45.
No. 2 Mead (14-6) has a district bye until Saturday afternoon. No. 1 Ferris (16-4) plays for the district title on Tuesday.
Ferris and one other GSL team will qualify for the May 22 Region IV tournament at a Big Nine Conference site.
League earned-run average champion Cameron Bowers (7-2) struck out eight, and Taylor West snapped a 1-all tie with a two-run double in the sixth during Rogers’ win over NC.
The Pirates turned two double plays for Bowers. Edgar Muniz of the Pirates scored twice and had two stolen bases.
Jamey Hebert struck out eight and allowed just Jason Wederspahn’s single in Shadle’s win over NC.
Chet Womach was 3 for 3, with a homer and four RBIs, and Derek Bishop scored three runs for Shadle Park.
Joe Spears (10-0) struck out 12 and had three RBIs, and Colville (19-1) defeated visiting Pullman 12-6 in the District 7 2A tournament.
Colville will play for the district title, and a regional berth, at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against Medical Lake (12-8). ML defeated Lakeside 15-9 in the day’s other game.
Lakeside (11-9) and Pullman (9-12) open Saturday’s play at 10 a.m., in a loser-out game. The winner will play the Colville/ML loser for the district’s other berth to region.
Brandon Wear added three hits and three RBIs during Colville’s win. Pullman’s Dusty Druffel was 3 for 4, and Trent Bray was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Joe Gaines hit a grand slam during a six-run first, and reliever Josh Earley allowed one run in four innings during ML’s win over visiting Lakeside.
Alexis Alexander added a solo homer during ML’s first inning, and Jeff Mitchell and Kevin Schmidt had two-run doubles in the fifth.
Josh Taylor homered in his first two at-bats for the Eagles. Lakeside’s Jake Krummel also homered, his eighth.
Softball
Brenda Covington homered and doubled during an 18-run sixth, and visiting Wellpinit (6-14) defeated Northport 23-4 to clinch the Panorama League’s eighth and final berth to the league tournament.
The tourney begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Kettle Falls. Five teams will advance to the District 7 B tournament. Republic and Selkirk have earned automatic district berths.
