Gsl Cleans Up In First Round

Greater Spokane League softball teams had their way in three of four openers during Saturday’s Region IV 4A tournament at Richland.
University, Shadle Park and Lewis and Clark all recorded opening-round wins in the chase for four berths to next weekend’s State 4A tournament at Vancouver.
The GSL swept the regional last year, with U-Hi, Shadle, Mead and Ferris advancing to state.
Megan Owen struck out five and Sara Steblaj stole home on a delayed steal as U-Hi (21-2) notched a 2-0 win over Wenatchee (13-3).
U-Hi plays LC this morning in a winner-to-state game. The Titans are 2-0 against the Tigers this year.
Kaylene Fountain struck out 11 and had three hits in LC’s 6-0 win over Big Nine No. 1 Walla Walla (17-6). Sarah Travis and Candice Powers added two hits apiece for the Tigers (16-8).
Jessica Murray pitched a five-hitter and had two hits as Shadle Park (20-3) recorded a 5-2 victory over Southridge (10-14).
Shadle plays a winner-to-state game this morning against Richland (20-3), a 2-0 winner over Central Valley (14-10).
Richland scored two unearned runs to knock off the Bears. CV was limited to two hits.
Colville (17-5) and Freeman (16-5) qualified for the state tournament after winning twice during the opening day of the District 7 2A tournament at Medical Lake.
Colville edged Deer Park 2-1 and blanked Kettle Falls 3-0. Freeman had a pair of shutouts, 8-0 over Riverside and 4-0 over Pullman.
Colville and Pullman play at 4 p.m. today for the No. 1 seed to the State 2A tournament at Yakima.
Medical Lake (14-7), Pullman (17-4), Colfax (10-12) and Kettle Falls (16-6) are still alive for the last of three berths to state. Today’s noon loser-out games are ML vs. Pullman and Colfax vs. KF. Winners will play at 2 p.m. for the right to meet the Colville/Freeman loser in the 6 p.m. game for the second and third state berths.
Brooke Brown struck out 11 and Lindsey Terry singled in the winning run in the sixth in Colville’s win over DP.
Rachel Kinservik struck out six and Aubrie Azzarito had three hits in KF’s 4-2 win over ML.
Christa Brossman had seven RBIs, including a grand slam in the third, to lead Pullman over Colfax 15-1.
Leslie White struck out 16 and Leslie Younker had three RBIs in Freeman’s win over Riverside.
Hannah McConnell had three hits and two RBIs as ML eliminated DP (7-14) with a 4-2 win.
Jaci Becker’s bases-clearing triple in the third helped Colfax to a 5-4 win that eliminated Riverside (9-13).
Billie Jo Buscher and Amber Puett had one run and one RBI apiece in Colville’s 3-0 win over KF.
White fanned 15 and Michelle Kiddoo had a two-run double in Freeman’s 4-0 win over Pullman.
