Nic Drafting Students Win Honors At Competition
Local North Idaho College drafting technology students recently won honors at the Idaho State Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America drafting competition.
Students and their divisions are:
Architectural division
Travis Blackmore, a Bonners Ferry High School graduate, earned first place; and Brandon Weholt and Eric Marvin, both graduates of Lakeland High School, took second and third place, respectively.
Mechanical drafting division
Spencer Ferguson, a Sandpoint High School graduate, won first place.
Competition included teams from Boise State University, College of Southern Idaho, Eastern Idaho Technical Institute, Idaho State University and Lewis-Clark State College, with NIC students receiving four of six medals awarded in the architectural division.
Blackmore and Ferguson both qualified for the national competition to be held in Kansas City, Mo., on June 28-July 2.
Bill Rutherford, food service manager at North Idaho College, has been selected as one of 18 individuals nationwide to attend a workshop at the Culinary Arts Institute of America headquarters in Greystone, Calif., in August.
Rutherford will participate in five days of hands-on production sessions, lectures and menu development, and gain valuable insight on topics such as vegetarian cooking, emerging food trends, workspace organization, contemporary sauces, salsas and condiments, ethnic food preparation and nutritional cooking principles. Tuition costs and books for the workshop will be paid by a corporate sponsor.
Rutherford became NIC’s food service manager in 1996 and recently oversaw the design of the new 17,000-square-foot food service area in the Edminster Student Union Building. The facility is open to the public and includes five restaurant stations, dining for 500, and employs 73 people.
Navy Fireman Megan L. Carroll, daughter of Jim and Deborah Carroll of Cataldo, has received the Certificate of Commendation in recognition of her superior performance of duty, dedication and initiative.
Carroll, a 1995 Kellogg High School graduate who joined the Navy in 1997, was also recognized for performing demanding duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner while assigned aboard the destroyer USS Paul F. Foster, homeported in Everett.
Amy Shaver received a Certificate of Award for competing in the Greater Spokane Music and Allied Arts Festival. Amy won her award in the Piano Division, Class 59, Open, Grades 7-8, Section 4.
