Double-Shifting Students Shine

Middle school students walking home in the dark in Post Falls now have flashing red lights to notify drivers of their presence.

Post Falls Middle School’s Spartan Parents Association and the Post Falls Fire Department handed out about 175 lights to students Tuesday.

They went mainly to sixth-graders, who haven’t participated in the Light-A-Child program in the past, said Debbie Mykkanen, an organizer of the 3-year-old program.

Students go to class in two shifts at Post Falls Middle School. This time of year, that means that one shift goes to school in the dark, and the other returns home in the dark.

Students who want a flashing light or reflective tape can receive them from the Post Falls fire station on Idaho Street.

Last year, 3M donated 300 yards of the reflective tape, which drivers can see from 1,000 feet, Mykkanen said.
