Sample Leads Way
Autumn Sample of Pullman had the top time in the 200-yard individual medley at the State 3A girls swimming prelims Thursday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Sample was timed in 2 minutes, 6.03 seconds. She was second in the 100 butterfly in 57.37.
West Valley’s Rikki Covey had the second-best times in the 200 freestyle (1:54.27) and 500 freestyle (5:05.04).
Stephanie Wagar of Cheney was seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.50. Pullman’s Eva Hershaw (50 free) and her school’s 200 free relay and 200 medley relay teams were 14th.
Soccer
Sunnyside Christian scored on its first four attempts during a shootout to defeat Valley Christian 2-1 in a State 1A/B boys soccer opener at Albi Stadium. The Knights play Northwest Christian (13-0-1) at 1 p.m. today at Albi for a berth in the state semifinals at Auburn.
Valley Christian (6-7-2) led 1-0 on Shane King’s goal at 70 minutes. The Panthers were within 1 minute of the win when they were whistled on a hand call. Bodie Jones’ penalty-kick goal forced overtime.
Scott Ellis and Jared Evans scored for VC in the shootout, but the Panthers were wide with their fourth and fifth attempts.
Football
The Mead-Richland State 4A playoff game has been moved from Rish Stadium in Richland to Kennewick’s Lampson Stadium at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Davenport-DeSales B-11 game will be played at 4 today in Kennewick. The day was incorrect in Thursday’s listings.
