Przekwas Gains Her Initial Win With Cougars

Jenny Przekwas recorded her first women’s basketball coaching victory at Washington State University on Saturday, a 66-44 decision over Wright State in the consolation game of the Coors Classic at Boulder, Colo.

Tricia Lamb scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Cougars. WSU allowed the fewest points since it posted an 88-37 win over Gonzaga eight years ago.

The Cougars (1-2) raced to an 11-0 lead after 4 minutes. The Raiders (0-4) cut the lead to two by halftime, but WSU opened the second half with an 8-0 run. The Cougars also ended the game with a 16-2 run, holding Wright State scoreless for the final 5 minutes, 1 second.

WSU’s Alke Dietel scored all of her 15 points in the second half.

The Cougars will play their home opener Saturday against Eastern Washington.

Karalyn Church had three steals in the final 1 minutes, preserving Vermont’s 73-67 win over Idaho (1-3) in the consolation game of the Rocky Mountain Classic at Fort Collins, Colo.

Church led the Catamounts (4-1) with nine steals and 19 points. Idaho senior Alli Nieman scored 25 points, on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, and added 12 rebounds.

Idaho led by as many as seven points in the first half. The Vandals trailed 69-67 with 43 seconds left, but Church’s steals sealed the outcome.

Idaho’s Susan Woolf had 24 points, including 5-of-11 shooting on 3-pointers, and six assists.

Idaho will begin play Friday at the Kansas State Tournament in Manhattan.

Allie Bailey totaled 20 points, 14 rebounds and five assists to rally Eastern Washington (2-1) to an 88-77 win over Army in the consolation game of the Furama Thanksgiving Classic at Los Angeles.

Bailey finished 6 of 7 from the floor and 8 of 11 from the line. She had 14 points and nine rebounds in the second half, when the Eagles fought back from a four-point deficit.

Bailey’s three-point play with 16:35 left gave the Eagles the lead for good. Jennifer Paluck added 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Megan Dempsey of Army (1-4) scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half.

Emily Stuenkel had four steals to guide a 13-3 advantage, and Whitworth opened its season with a 76-47 non-conference win over Chapman University at Orange, Calif.

Jennifer Bennett had nine rebounds for the Pirates, and Dana Wilder came off the bench to score 10 points, on 5-of-8 shooting, in 16-1/2 minutes.

April Abeyta had 11 rebounds and reserve Polly Neves 10 points for the Panthers (3-1).

Heather Ridnour scored 21 on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor, including 3 of 3 on 3-pointers, and Community Colleges of Spokane defeated the Eastern Oregon junior varsity 117-37 in the Super 8/Warrior Classic at Walla Walla.

Karie Pruett added 12 assists for the Sasquatch (2-0). Three other CCS players scored in double figures, including Heather Ortiz (12), who was 6 of 7 from the floor. Bernice Stime added 5-of-6 shooting and a team-high five rebounds.

All-tournament selection Whitney Lewis had seven kills and four aces to lead Eastern Washington (24-7) to a 15-11, 15-11, 15-11 victory over Idaho in the Branegan’s/Northwest Dodge Challenge at Moscow.

Lacey Coover added 10 kills, and Kim Maxwell made the all-tourney team for EWU.

Idaho finished 17-15, its eighth consecutive winning season.

In the day’s first match, Tara Brinkerhoff’s 13 digs and 11 kills helped Boise State (9-20) top Gonzaga 3-0.

Chera Sommer added 37 assists and 16 digs for the Broncos. Heather Osberg had 20 digs and 11 kills for the Bulldogs (6-24), and all-tourney choice Shannon O’Connor added 13 kills.

Angela Lewis had 20 kills and Zara Budenbender added 16 digs, and Sacramento State (22-9) defeated Washington State 3-0 in the consolation match of the Pacific Community Bankers Classic at Stockton, Calif.

Lewis had eight kills each in the first two wins. WSU couldn’t hold a 10-7 lead in its 17-15 third-game loss.

Maureen Rafferty added 12 digs, 51 assists, and hit .364 for the Hornets. Senior Joy Sperry led the Cougars (13-15) with 21 kills and 11 digs.
