Library To Discuss Filtering Web Access

From Staff Reports

The Post Falls Public Library board will hold a special meeting on Friday to consider changes in its computer use policy.

Recently, some residents have criticized the library’s policy of not filtering Internet access. Some candidates for Post Falls City Council have brought it up in their campaigns, saying that the city should not allow children to have access to online pornography at the public library.

A citizen brought the issue before the City Council in September, suggesting that all library computers should be filtered.

But filtering software is flawed, said City Council members and Mayor Gus Johnson; it often blocks sites it shouldn’t and fails to block sites it should.

The library’s existing policy states that terminals cannot be used for accessing inappropriate sites.

The meeting will take place in the civic conference room of Post Falls City Hall on Friday at 4 p.m.
