Colville Nets A Crown
Colville worked overtime Saturday to win the championship of the District 7 3A volleyball tournament on its home court.
The Indians defeated Cheney 15-13, 15-13 for the title and No. 1 seed to Saturday’s Region IV 3A tournament at Selah. Second-seeded Cheney had forced an extra match by tripping top-seeded Colville 18-16, 15-12 earlier in the day.
Cheney is the No. 2 seed to region and will open against Mid-Valley No. 3 Hanford in a loser-out match. Colville has an opening-round bye, and will play the winner of M-V No. 2 West Valley (Yakima) and M-V No. 4 Ellensburg.
Selah, the M-V No. 1, also has an opening-round bye at region.
Cheney, which opened its district day by eliminating West Valley 2-0, led Colville 7-3 and 12-9 in the first game of the championship match. Three blocks by Karlie Pein closed out the game for Colville, then the Indians went up 5-0 in the second game. The match ended on an ace by Katie Fondell.
Amanda Higgins had 25 digs and seven blocks as visiting Medical Lake (7-5) defeated Chewelah 15-11, 12-15, 12-15, 15-0, 15-7 to complete the Great Northern League season. Kassi White had 16 kills and seven blocks for Chewelah (4-8)… . In the other league final, Amy Chamberlain had 21 kills and four blocks as visiting Pullman (10-2) outlasted Newport 2-15, 15-10, 7-15, 15-11, 15-8. Dess Wendle had 26 kills and five blocks for Newport (4-8)… . The District 7 2A tournament is Saturday at East Valley. Loser-out openers are No. 6 Riverside vs. No. 3 ML, and Chewelah vs. Newport (both tied for fourth place). First-match winners advance to play No. 2 Pullman or No. 1 Lakeside.
Springdale pulled a surprise, defeating Northwest Christian 15-13, 8-15, 15-8 in the Panorama League tournament title match at Kettle Falls. Springdale, seeded fifth into the six-team tournament, lost to NWC 3-0 during the regular season. Springdale earned the No. 1 seed to the District 7 B tournament, starting Thursday at EWU in Cheney. NWC, which had won five straight league tournaments, is the No. 2 to district. Selkirk defeated St. George’s 2-1 in the match for third and fourth district seeds. District openers are Springdale vs. Bi-County League No. 4 Ritzville; NWC vs. Bi-Co No. 3 Almira/Coulee-Hartline; Selkirk vs. Bi-Co No. 2 Wilbur-Creston; and St. George’s vs. Bi-Co No. 1 Davenport.
Top-seeded Davenport defeated Wilbur-Creston 15-9, 15-1 in the championship match of the Bi-County League tournament at Odessa. Ritzville earned the No. 4 seed to district by eliminating Reardan 2-0.
Colfax (6-0) defeated visiting Liberty 3-0 in the Northeast A League for its fifth consecutive undefeated league season. The District 7 1A tournament is Saturday at Mead High. Openers are Colfax vs. Kettle Falls, and Liberty vs. Freeman.
Girls soccer
Lacie Wilson, Suzanne Rieseberg and Ericka Oscarson scored during a 3-2 shootout to lift third-seeded Lakeside to a 2-1 win over second-seeded Pullman in a loser-out opener of the District 7 2A tournament at Riverside. Wilson also scored in regulation for the Eagles. The Greyhounds’ Mindee Crum forced OT with a goal at 70 minutes… . Lakeside advances to the next round against Riverside, a 6-0 winner over Medical Lake. Larissa Mueller scored five goals for Riverside. The Rams play Lakeside at noon Saturday at Riverside.
Pasco and Kamiakin won District 5/6 tournament playoffs to qualify for the State 4A tournament. Pasco defeated Eisenhower 2-1, and Kamiakin edged top-seeded Richland 1-0. Pasco and Kamiakin play Tuesday for seeding to state. The winner hosts Greater Spokane League No. 1, and the loser travels to GSL No. 2. Mead and Central Valley play Tuesday to determine GSL seeding.
Eastmont defeated Selah 3-0 in the District 5/6 playoffs. Eastmont will play at Spokane’s West Valley (8-8-1) at 3 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out regional match. Cheney has an bye at region and will await the Selah/Hanford winner.
Football
Clint Hull threw five touchdown passes, four to Bobby Sapp, and visiting Pateros (5-2, 5-3) defeated Curlew 38-6 in the Northeast B-8. Hull completed 15 of 22 passes for 256 yards. Sapp had five catches for 136 yards. Pateros is one game behind first-place Cusick and Sprague-Harrington heading into the final game of the regular season.
Sandpoint, playing in its own gym, defeated Highland 15-6, 15-6 Saturday to win the Idaho A-1 volleyball championship. Earlier Saturday, Sandpoint (27-1) defeated Highland in the semifinal 15-4, 15-8. Coeur d’Alene (24-12) earned the fourth-place trophy. In the A-2 tournament, St. Maries settled for second place after falling to Bear Lake 15-2, 15-6 in the final.
