Spotlight: Climbing

Jim Whittaker, the first American to climb to the summit of Mt. Everest, will be at REI, 1125 N. Monroe, Thursday at 7 p.m. for a slide show and book signing.

Whittaker’s autobiography, “A Life on the Edge: Memoirs of Everest and Beyond,” recounts his life from the 1963 climb. In 1990, he returned and led the celebrated International Peace Climb, taking a team of Chinese, Russians and Americans to the top of Everest.

There is no charge. Seating is first-come, first-served.
