Maryland 33, West Virginia 0: Lamont Jordan ran for a career-high 164 yards and the unbeaten Terrapins (3-0) defeated the Mountaineers (1-2) at College Park, Md.

Calvin McCall threw two TD passes for Maryland, which last opened a season with three straight wins in 1995.

Maryland had lost three straight to the Mountaineers by a combined 86-34 score, but this time the Terrapins stymied an attack that was averaging 33 points per game.

Virginia 35, Wake Forest 7: At Charlottesville, Va., Thomas Jones ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns as the Cavaliers (2-1, 2-1 ACC) defeated the Demon Deacons (1-1, 0-1) for the 16th consecutive time.

Northwestern 15, Duke 12 (OT): Northwestern’s Nick Kreinbrink went for broke in overtime, hitting Sam Simmons on a 27-yard scoring pass as the Wildcats (2-1) defeated the Blue Devils (0-2) at Durham, N.C.

Duke was limited to 187 total yards in regulation and hasn’t scored a TD in coach Carl Franks’ first two games.

Vanderbilt 37, Mississippi 34 (OT): Chris Zolman hit Elliott Carson for an 8-yard touchdown pass in overtime as the Commodores (2-1, 1-1 SEC) picked up their first SEC road victory in five years by defeating the Rebels (2-1, 0-1 SEC) at Oxford, Miss.

Ole Miss scored first in overtime on Les Binkley’s 34-yard field goal. Vandy responded with a TD six plays later.

Auburn 41, LSU 7: Ben Leard threw three touchdown passes and engineered four other scores to lead Auburn’s win at Baton Rouge, La.

Auburn had no trouble giving coach Tommy Tuberville his third straight victory over LSU. Tuberville, in his first year at Auburn (3-0 overall, 1-0 SEC), beat LSU (2-1, 0-1) the past two years while coaching Mississippi.

Mississippi St. 29, Oklahoma St. 11: Dontae Walker rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown as the Bulldogs (3-0) defeated the Cowboys (2-1) at Starkville, Miss.

The game was marred by 12 turnovers - six by each team - and 195 yards in penalties.

East Carolina 21, South Carolina 3: At Columbia, S.C., David Garrard ran for a touchdown and passed for another as the Pirates (3-0) ruined Lou Holtz’s home debut as coach of the Gamecocks (0-3).

Tulane 48, Army 28: Patrick Ramsey broke his week-old school record by passing for 447 yards and four touchdowns as the Green Wave (2-1, 1-1 C-USA) defeated the Cadets (0-2, 0-1) at New Orleans.

Illinois 41, Louisville 36: Kurt Kittner threw four touchdown passes and Steve Havard ran for 123 yards and another score as the Fighting Illini (3-0) defeated the Cardinals (2-1) at Louisville, Ky.

Kittner was 17 of 24 for 244 yards and touchdowns of 8, 12, 49 and 67 yards as the Illini racked up 466 total yards.

Southwest

Oklahoma 41, Baylor 10: Josh Heupel set Oklahoma single-game records for completions, attempts, passing yards and total offense as the Sooners (2-0, 1-0 Big 12) defeated the Bears (0-3, 0-1) at Norman, Okla.

Heupel was 37 of 54 for 420 yards and three touchdowns. He had set school marks for completions (31) and touchdowns (5) and had tied the record for yards (341) in last week’s 49-0 victory over Division I-AA Indiana State.

Texas 18, Rice 13: At Austin, Texas, Hodges Mitchell rushed for 188 yards and Kris Stockton kicked four field goals as the Longhorns (3-1) struggled but managed to defeat the Owls (0-3), who scored their first two touchdowns of the season in a second-half rally.

Houston 45, Louisiana-Lafayette 0: Ketric Sanford and Mike Green each rushed for over 100 yards as the Cougars (2-1) defeated the Ragin’ Cajuns (0-3) at Houston.

Houston gained 300 rushing yards for the first time since 1985 and recorded its first shutout since a 64-0 victory over Rice in 1989.

Midwest

Kentucky 44, Indiana 35: Dusty Bonner passed for 304 yards and five touchdowns, two of them to Dougie Allen, as the Wildcats (2-1) defeated the Hoosiers (1-2) at Bloomington, Ind.

Antwaan Randle El ran for three touchdowns and passed for one TD for the Hoosiers, but had three passes intercepted, two in the closing minutes.

Minnesota 55, Illinois St 7: Billy Cockerham threw for a career-high 218 yards, ran for career-best 156 and accounted for four touchdowns in the Golden Gophers (3-0) defeated the I-AA Redbirds (2-1) at Minneapolis.

Cockerham, replaced by backup Andy Persby last week after a 4-for-15 performance against Louisiana-Monroe, completed 18 of 22 against Illinois State. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others.

Missouri 48, W. Michigan 34: DeVaughn Black ran for 205 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers (2-0) outlasted the Broncos (1-2) at Columbia, Mo.

Iowa 24, Northern Illinois 0: Ladell Betts ran for a careerbest 174 yards and a touchdown to spark Iowa as the Hawkeyes (1-2) defeated the Huskies (0-3) at Iowa City, Iowa.

Akron 25, Temple 15: Brandon Payne ran for two touchdowns and 156 yards to lead the Zips (2-1) past the Owls (0-3) at Akron, Ohio.

Temple was scoreless through 11 quarters this season before producing two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

East

Boston College 14, Navy 10: Carlton Rowe scored on a 6-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to give Boston College the lead and the Eagles (2-0) held on to defeat the Midshipmen (1-2) at Annapolis, Md.

Pittsburgh 30, Kent 23: Kevan Barlow rushed for a career-high 206 yards, including touchdown runs of 61 and 57 yards, to lead the Panthers (2-1) past the Golden Flashes (0-3) at Pittsburgh.

Kent had the nation’s longest major-college losing streak extended to 16 games.

West

Colorado 51, Kansas 17: Mike Moschetti threw two touchdown passes before leaving the game with a knee injury, and Jeremy Aldrich kicked a school-record five field goals as the Buffaloes (2-1, 1-0), who led 33-3 in the third quarter, routed the Jayhawks (1-2, 0-1) at Boulder, Colo.

Moschetti departed late in the first half with a sprained left knee.

Aldrich kicked field goals of 49, 42, 48, 41 and 40 yards.

Iowa St. 24, UNLV 0: Darren Davis rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns as the Cyclones (3-0) defeated the Runnin’ Rebels (2-1), spoiling John Robinson’s home debut with UNLV.

San Jose St. 38, St. Mary’s 3: At San Jose, Calif., Deonce Whitaker scored a school-record five touchdowns and rushed for 203 yards as the Spartans defeated the Gaels to win their home opener for the first time since 1992.

Marshall set an all-divisions record with its 104th victory this decade and Chad Pennington threw four touchdown passes in the Thundering Herd’s 35-16 victory over visiting Bowling Green… . Sophomore tailback Taber Small scored two touchdowns as I-AA Connecticut, which will move up to Division I-A next year, recorded its first-ever victory over a I-A opponent, shutting out visiting Buffalo 23-0… . Travis Prentice scored four times and rushed for 116 yards as Miami (Ohio) beat visiting Eastern Michigan 35-14… . Chester Taylor rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown to lead visiting Toledo to its 23-10 victory over Ball State… . Wes Counts passed for a school-record 362 yards and three touchdowns as I-A newcomer Middle Tennessee defeated Division II Wofford 52-42.
