UI Splits Long Matches

Kodi Taylor had 16 kills and hit .324 Saturday night, helping Montana take a 7-15, 15-5, 15-6, 17-15 volleyball victory over Idaho at the Montana Invitational in Missoula.

Sarah Parsons added 18 kills and 13 digs for the Grizzlies (9-1).

Idaho (8-3) opened the day with a 15-10, 14-16, 13-15, 15-12, 15-10 win over Central Florida in a match that took 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Regan Butler had 39 kills and hit .326 on the day for the Vandals. Mindy Marques added a team-high 25 digs.

Freshman Holly Harris totaled 15 kills, 20 digs and six blocks in Washington State’s 3-1 win over visiting California in the Pacific-10 Conference.

Joy Sperry added 19 kills and a .264 hitting percentage for the Cougars (6-3, 1-1). WSU sophomore Kristen Johnson had a career-high 10 blocks and nine kills.

Brook Coulter of Cal (4-3, 1-1) had 15 kills and 17 digs.

Willamette (6-1, 2-1) scored the final six points of the third game and seven straight in the fourth game to turn back host Whitworth 3-1 in the Northwest Conference.

Renee Purdy of the Bearcats had four of her 15 kills during a 13-1 start in the second game. Lindsey Wagstaff and Nicole Weedman of the Pirates (4-5, 1-1) each served five consecutive points for a 10-0 first-game lead.

Men’s soccer

Philimon Tudor set up the first goal and scored the second in North Idaho College’s 3-1 home win over Flathead Valley CC.

Sau’l Mendoza had two goals and one assist, and goalkeeper Tyler Stitt registered his third consecutive shutout as CCS defeated Bellevue 6-0 at Spokane Falls CC.

Erik Johnson scored the first Sasquatch goal, finishing off a Mendoza direct free kick that hit the post.

Jason Kuska scored his team-leading fifth goal and Gonzaga defeated San Diego State 2-0 Friday night at the Coors Soccer Classic in Las Vegas.

Women’s soccer

Utah (4-2) scored 15 seconds after a Washington State score, then held on for a 3-1 win over the Cougars (3-2) in the Diadora Cup at Missoula.

Natalie Kehl’s goal at 72 minutes cut the Utes’ lead to 2-1, but Utah took the ensuing kickoff straight down the field for a goal.

Cross country

Washington State’s men won the Division I race at the Big Cross Invitational in Pasco, despite a mix-up on the 8-kilometer course that affected two Cougars runners.

WSU’s Oscar Franco-Parra and John Welsh were leading the pack at 2 miles when they were misdirected on the course. The mistake benefited Chris Charles, who ran unattached and won in 26 minutes, 37 seconds. WSU still defeated runner-up Boise State by 42 points.

BSU’s women edged Idaho 42-45 for the Division I title, led by champion Abby Peters’ 18:18 for 5K.

North Idaho College placed third in the non-Division I men’s race. Former Cheney High runner Ryan Pauling was the winner in 26:24. Wendy Brunearu, running unattached, finished in 19:25 to edge Jenni Saling of CCS for the nonDivision I women’s title.

Amber Johnson ran 19:02.8 for 3 miles to win the Eastern Washington University Invitational at Finch Arboretum.

EWU’s women finished 1-7. Brandon Hauver, running unattached, ran 25:11 for 4.5 miles to defeat EWU’s Chris Henderson (25:20) in the men’s race.

SOFTBALL TITLE AT STAKE Spokane’s Fresh Pak qualified for today’s championship game with three wins at the Coed Major National Tournament in Plano, Texas. Cris Coffield was 5 for 5 with two home runs in a 28-16 win over Hardliner of Irvin, Texas, to open the day. Coffield is 18 for 19 in the tournament.
