Chiefs Manhandle Seattle

Derek Schutz scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Spokane Chiefs to a 6-1 exhibition win over the Seattle Thunderbirds at Tri-Cities Coliseum on Sunday.

Lynn Loyns staked Spokane to a 1-0 lead at the 7-minute mark of the first period. Chris Barr assisted on the goal.

Keegan McAvoy pulled Seattle even with a goal at 9:05 in the second period, but goals by Spokane’s Jared Smyth and Schutz made it 3-1 heading into the final period.

Kurt Sauer netted a goal at 1:27 to put Spokane up 4-1. Schutz and Kris Callaway rounded out the scoring for the Chiefs.

Spokane goalie Mike Lencucha stopped nine of 10 shots in 33 minutes of action. Shane Gris played the final 27 minutes and turned back eight shots. The Chiefs outshot the Thunderbirds 35-18 on the night. Spokane bombarded Seattle goalie Ray Fraser with 13 shots over the first 3 minutes of the final period.
