Senate Passes Ban On Weapons At School

The Senate on Friday overwhelmingly approved a bill to keep weapons out of schools and sent it to Gov. Dirk Kempthorne for his signature.

The legislation, which was unanimously endorsed by the House, represents an alternative to the measure that Kempthorne vetoed a year ago because it would have allowed students to keep guns in locked cars on school property.

Kempthorne has said he will sign the new version, which would make it illegal for children and adults to possess guns, knives with blades longer than 2-1/2 inches, bombs, bomb-making material or other deadly weapons on school property. Weapons possession by students at school-sponsored events off campus, such as proms and graduation, also would be banned.
