Private School Again Seeks Permit To Grow
For the second time in less than a year, the owners of Elk Mountain Academy are asking Bonner County commissioners to allow the school to grow.
Elk Mountain Academy is a private behavioral school for teenagers near Clark Fork, Idaho.
Last spring, the county approved a conditional use permit for the school to house 25 students. The permit included a condition that the school be on probation for two years before receiving an extension of the permit.
School administrators returned last fall to ask for an increase in the student and staff numbers, from 25 to 36 students and from 16 to 24 staff members. The commissioners unanimously denied the request.
Now, Elk Mountain is making the same request.
The facility is built to accommodate 36 students, so no facility expansions are proposed. A tentative date for the Bonner County Commissioners to hear the new request is May 4, according to the county planning department.
The Clark Fork City Council voted recently to oppose the increase, at least until the probation period is complete.
