Arizona Lashes Back At WSU

Kenny Huff hit for the cycle, went 5 for 6 and had four runs batted in Saturday, and Arizona (22-25, 7-11) totaled a season-high 28 hits to stomp Washington State 21-3 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Tucson, Ariz.

Huff, the first Wildcats player to hit for the cycle since 1995, tripled in the first, singled in the second, homered in the sixth and doubled in the eighth. The team’s 28 hits were six more than Arizona State had against WSU on April 14.

Ray Hattenburg of the Cougars went 2 for 4 for his 21st multiple-hit game of the season. Hattenburg leads the club with a .373 batting average.

WSU (16-26, 4-11) won the series 2-1, but has dropped 13 of its last 17.

Marc Rittenhouse homered twice and went 4 for 4 to lead Washington (18-20) to an 11-4, non-conference win over 23rd-ranked Wichita State at Wichita, Kan.

Matt Massingale (4-5) scattered seven hits for his third complete game. The Huskies turned five double plays to assist Massingale.

UW has won four straight.

Softball

Shannon Fritzke and Tharen Michael hit two-run homers and three pitchers combined on a one-hitter, leading Pacific Lutheran (29-2-1, 13-1 Northwest Conference) to a 14-1 win at Whitworth (4-19, 3-11).

PLU’s Irene Bryant had two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Whitworth’s Aubrie Caldwell singled.

Kylee Curry pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Rebecca Triplett followed with a one-hitter, as Community Colleges of Spokane (17-3 NWAACC) swept Everett 9-0, 15-0 at Spokane Falls CC.

Kris Rozett’s two-run double highlighted a four-run second in the opener. Triplett, Curry and Jill Miller had two RBIs apiece in the second game, Curry on a two-run home run.

Rowing

Gonzaga’s men and women swept UC San Diego on Long Lake.

GU’s women’s varsity eight finished the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 38 seconds, nearly 1 minute ahead of the field. The men’s varsity eight edged the Tritons 6:53 to 6:54.6, reversing a 4-second setback to UCSD three weeks ago.

Western Washington’s men defeated Washington State in four of five races at Lake Whatcom near Bellingham. WSU won the novice eight race by 8 seconds.

Washington State’s novice eight women’s team defeated Michigan State and Clemson during races on Lake Ovid near East Lansing, Mich.

Michigan State won four races.

Women’s tennis

Puget Sound defeated Whitworth 6-3 in the fifth-place match at the Northwest Conference tournament at Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District Tennis Center in McMinnville, Ore.

Whitworth edged Willamette 5-4 to advance to the fifth-place match.
