Benewah County Santa
Rebecca Millstien and Denise Sochinsky were recognized by the University of Idaho’s Student Support Services as Trio Achievers. Trio Achievers have completed their degree despite obstacles such as economic disadvantages or disabilities. Both students will graduate in May with degrees in elementary education.
Bonner County Careywood
Teams of four will compete in the Idaho State Forestry Contest from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at the Ray and Fairy Delay farm in Careywood. Timber cruising, plant identification, compass and pacing, map reading, silviculture, tool identification, tree health, soil and water quality, noxious weeds and scaling may be part of the event. Boundary County North Bench
Firefighters from North Bench took first place over nine other fire departments in single evolution fire hose competition during the North Idaho Emergency Services Training Academy. Naples took second in the double evolution competition. The three-day training session took place at Lake City High School.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The First Judicial District Court Appointed Special Advocates will begin a 32 hour volunteer guardian ad litem certification training course Tuesday. People interested in participating must be 21 years old, receive a criminal history check, be able to communicate effectively and have a high regard for children and families. Latah County Moscow
The University of Idaho’s Enrichment Program is seeking donations for the Sponsor-a-Child program. The program provides partial scholarships to enable children from low-income families to participate in educational summer classes. Contributions can be mailed to Enrichment Program, P.O. Shoshone County Pinehurst
Tom and DeAnn Hei, lifelong Silver Valley residents, are the new lease-to-own managers of the Tall Pine Restaurant. Mel and Lori Quimby previously ran the restaurant for owners Joyce and Hoyt McLean. The Heis are remodeling the restaurant in a ‘50s decor, with pictures of local hot rods, but they plan to keep the same menu.
WASHINGTON
Pend Oreille County Usk
The Port of Pend Oreille is making plans for improvements to the Blueslide Tunnel. A $489,000 grant will relocate drainage and stabilize the tunnel. Currently, drainage comes down over the north side of the tunnel. In addition to these improvements, the Port is considering other structural improvements to the tunnel between Cusick and Ione.
Spokane County Spokane
To celebrate suicide prevention week, Self Acceptance is Life , in association with Campfire Boys and Girls, will host a “Walk for Life” followed by a candlelight vigil May 4 at 6 p.m. at Franklin Park, at Division and Queen. Free resources will be provided to help build understanding about suicide prevention. Candles will be provided.
Whitman County Colfax
Will the Colfax City Council begin sessions with a prayer? The council is considering such a move. Councilman John Brabb has been proposing meetings be opened with an invocation that is “nondenominational.” Councilman Bob Ingalls, an ordained minister, is preparing a nondenominational prayer for possible approval. Until then, the council is checking the legal ramifications and considering a moment of silence as an alternative.

Lincoln County Libby
Sunday has been declared Inez Herrig Day in Libby by Mayor Tony Berget. Herrig is a life-long resident of Libby and is celebrating her 90th birthday. She served 60 years as county librarian before retiring in 1989.
