Osburn To Host Mining Contest
Miners from across the West will gather here Saturday for the 13th Coeur d’Alene District Mining Contest.
The competition features four events. In hand mucking, miners fill a one-ton ore car with washed gravel. Winning times are usually under one minute, said Guy Sande, one of the contest organizers.
“Nobody has to do that everyday like they used to. But all the other events are activities important to mining operations,” he said.
The competition begins at 8:30 a.m. in Gene Day Park and runs all day.
Other events are spike driving, machine mucking and jackleg drilling. Women compete in spike driving and hand mucking. There are contests for children as well.
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a local college-bound student on the day of the competition. For more information on the scholarship, call Sande at (208) 752-4407.
