Judy Sandell Spirit Lake, Idaho

Memorial service for Judy Faye Sandell, 70, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Victory Garden Chapel in Spirit Lake. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sandell, who was born in Quanah, Texas, died Saturday.

She grew up in Quanah and in the early 1950s moved to Redondo Beach, Calif., She was a homemaker.

In 1982, she worked as an electrical technician and worked on a space shuttle.

Mrs. Sandell moved to Spirit Lake in 1999 to be near family. She enjoyed knitting and crochetting.

Her husband, Dell Pettus, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Steven Sandell of Ogden, Utah, Jhonnie Sandell of Spirit Lake and Mark Pettus of Marlboro, N.Y.; two daughters, Laura Sandell of Spirit Lake and Hazel Desparois of Eugene, Ore.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Minnie Raupe Coeur d’Alene

Service for Minnie R. Raupe, 96, will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene with burial to follow at 1 p.m. at Potlatch Cemetery in Potlatch, Idaho. Mrs. Raupe, who was born in Marina, Okla., died Monday.

She worked in the office of a telephone company in Oklahoma.

She married Lester Raupe in 1926 and in 1946 they moved to Potlatch, where she was a homemaker. They moved to Post Falls in 1982.

Her husband died in 1985.

She was a member of the Post Falls Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Danny Raupe of Arkansas; a daughter, Bonnie Cooper of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, Harry Bunney of Louisiana and Earl Bunney of Oklahoma; two sisters, Merle Michalak and Margie Pangle, both of Lewiston; four grandchildren and five great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Tammy Thompson Garcia Hayden, Idaho

Graveside service for Tammy Thompson Garcia, 42, will be Friday at 9 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. at Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Rathdrum, Idaho. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Garcia, who was born in Little Rock, Ark., died Sunday.

In 1987 she married Adam Garcia 1987 and they moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1994. She was a homemaker and member of Coeur d’Alene Master Gardeners.

Mrs. Garcia was active in quilting, cooking, and sewing.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Lacey Thompson, Rachel Garcia and Hannah Garcia, all of Hayden; her mother and father, Peggy Burr of Hayden and James Applewhite of Arkansas; a sister, Vickie Rubom of Arkansas; and two brothers, Randy Byrne of California and Wayne Byrne of Oregon.

Robert Anderson Spokane

No service will be held for Robert L. “Andy” Anderson, 70, at his request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Boulder, Colo., Mr. Anderson died Sunday.

He graduated in 1948 from Warrington (Ore.) High School.

From 1948 to 1957 he served in the Air Force in radio repair.

In 1977 he moved to Spokane from Portland.

Mr. Anderson worked for three years for a farm equipment company and for seven years at American Sign and Indicator. He later worked as a production planner for J.E. Love Company in Garfield, Wash., and retired in 1991.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435 and the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Theora; two daughters, Susan Graham of Oregon and Barbara Holland of Ohio; two stepsons, Ed Middlesworth of California and Keith Middlesworth of Connecticut; a stepdaughter, Elina Middlesworth of Spokane; a brother, Lloyd Anderson of Missouri; two sisters, Monita Newton of Oregon and Elaine Ross of Missouri; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Margaret Henry, M.D. Hayden Lake, Idaho

Memorial service for Margaret Elizabeth Henry, M.D., 86, will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Colfax, Wash. Dr. Henry, who is credited as one of the first women ophthalmologists, died Tuesday.

Born in Endicott, Wash., she grew up in Whitman County. She graduated from Washington State University in Pullman and attended Oregon Medical School until 1939, following in the footsteps of her two older brothers.

Dr. Henry practiced medicine with her brother, Randall, in Endicott from 1940 to 1941. She later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine, specializing in ophthalmology.

She served a residency in ophthalmology at both University of California and Stanford. In 1945 she opened a private practice in San Francisco, where she was appointed chief ophthalmologist at the Children’s Hospital in 1952.

Dr. Henry worked at the University of California throughout her career and became a clinical professor of ophthalmology in 1971.

She spent summers at the family residence in Hayden Lake for many years.

She participated in numerous medical societies and served as president of the Northern California Society to Prevent Blindness. This organization recently established the Margaret Henry and Daniel G. Vaughan Lecture as a tribute.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Byron Henry of Spokane and Romelle Scott of Clarkston, Wash.; a cousin, Laura Jo Barth of Vancouver, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

Catherine (Riggs) Rawlings Tekoa, Wash.

Memorial service for Catherine P. (Riggs) Rawlings, a 75-year Tekoa resident, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ in Tekoa. Private burial will be at the Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rawlings, 98, died Sunday. She was born in Rosalia, Wash.

She graduated in 1920 from Tekoa High School and received a teaching certificate in 1922 from Lewiston Normal School.

Mrs. Rawlings taught in Santa, Idaho, and at the Grandview Country School in Benewah County, Idaho.

She married Earl Rawlings in 1925 and they made their home in Tekoa. They spent winters in Apache Junction, Ariz., from 1978 to 1991.

Her husband died in 1992.

Mrs. Rawlings moved into the Tekoa Care Center in 1998.

She was a homemaker and a member of the United Church of Christ in Tekoa, the Order of Eastern Star in Oakesdale, Wash., and the P.E.O.

Survivors include two brothers, Sanford Riggs of Spokane and James Riggs of Post Falls; and a sister, Marian Gossett of Tekoa.

Mathew `Mat’ Hendrickson Mullan, Idaho

Service for Mathew “Mat” Hjalmar Hendrickson, 88, will be today at 11 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Mullan. Inurnment will be held at the Mountain View Cemetery in Mullan. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hendrickson, who was born in Roberts, Mont., died Monday.

He moved to Mullan in the 1930s and married Tyyne Toumala in 1937. Mr. Hendrickson worked for The Star Mine for many years, and was a member of the Christian Life Center in Kellogg and a former member of the Wallace Elks Lodge.

He also served as a member of the auxiliary military police of the Idaho State Guard for the Frederal Mining & Smelting Company of Mullan during World War II.

He wife died in 1992.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, including Eleanor Wild of Kellogg, Elsie Ely of Smelterville, Idaho, Doris Welch of Silverton, Idaho, and Mae Masse of Absarokee, Mont.; and several cousins.

Beverly Kambeitz Spokane

Private service will be held for Beverly J. Kambeitz, 66. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Mrs. Kambeitz died Friday.

Mrs. Kambeitz graduated from Kinman Business University, and was a 50-year Spokane resident.

She worked for the city of Spokane for 25 years and had worked as a clerk for the water department. before retiring in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff and Mike Buyanovich, and a daughter, Carolyn Davis, all of Spokane; a brother, Ken Kambeitz of California; and a granddaughter.

Donald Van Ness Sagle, Idaho

Private family service for Donald Patrick Van Ness, 18, will be held at a later date. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Van Ness, who was born in Auburn, Calif., died Wednesday from injuries received in an automobile/train accident near Algoma, Idaho.

He was active in fishing, motorcycle riding and camping.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Patrick and Jennifer Van Ness of Sagle; a brother, Sean Van Ness of Sagle; his grandmothr, Carole Van Ness of Reno. Nev.; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Ray Wright Newman Lake

Memorial gathering for Ray Herman Wright, 81, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 20 at Valley Mission Park. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Big Sandy, Mont., Mr. Wright died Sunday.

He worked on the family farm as a young adult and had worked on the Noxon Rapids Dam in Montana.

In 1960 he married Helen Jenkins.

He later worked as an operating engineer in road construction and as a welder.

Mr. Wright was a member of the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association and served on the committee that started the Northwest Regional Fiddlers Contest in Spokane.

His wife died in 1990.

Survivors include his companion of seven years, Mildred Loosemore of Newman Lake; five children, Beverlee Frese, Linda Dreiske and C.J. Fisher, all of Spokane, Sheila Everts of Post Falls and Diane Forest of Orofino, Idaho; a brother, Howard Wright of Essex, Mont.; two sisters, Myrtle Richard of Spokane and Mernie Weathers of Laurel, Md.

Esther Wunderlich San Rafael, Calif.

Memorial graveside service for Esther F. Wunderlich, a former Spokane resident, will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 16 at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane. Keaton Mortuary in San Rafael is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wunderlich, who died July 6, was born in Ashland, Wis. She was 97.

In 1920 her family moved to Newport, Wash., and she graduated from high school there in 1921.

She taught school in Usk, Wash., from 1921 to 1928.

In 1928 she married Edward Wunderlich and they lived in north Idaho for 12 years before moving to Spokane in 1942.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Spokane.

Mrs. Wunderlich moved to San Rafael in 1998.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Roecks of Mill Valley, Calif.; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Napier Spokane

Memorial service for Kenneth E. Napier, 66, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Napier, who was born in Wheatland, Wyo., died Saturday.

He was a longtime resident of the Spokane and Post Falls area.

Mr. Napier served in the Air Force during the 1950s, and worked as a truck driver for the Teamsters.

Survivors include three sons, John, Ken Jr. and Wayne Napier, all of Spokane; three daughters, Jody Cantu and Kari Reardon, both of Nine Mile Falls, and Jeannie Bryant of the Tri Cities; four brothers, Floyd Napier of Spokane, Danny Napier of Post Falls, Dale Napier of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Bob Napier of Butte, Mont.; a sister, Patty Comer of Spokane; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Virgil Teeter Hayden Lake, Idaho

Visitation for Virgil L. Teeter Jr., 79, will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Community United Methodist Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Teeter, who was born in Little River, Kan., died Tuesday.

He graduated from high school in Hutchinson, Kan., and attended Hutchinson Junior College and Kansas State College.

Mr. Teeter also graduated from Naval Flight School as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and served as a fighter pilot in the Soloman Islands during World War II.

He became a captain and served as a flight instructor in Jacksonville, Fla., until the war ended.

Mr. Teeter married Virginia Bogart in 1943 and moved to Geneseo, Kan. He co-owned a lumber and hardware business for 15 years.

The couple moved to Haven, Kan., and worked in the banking and insurance business for 15 years before retiring and settling in Hayden Lake.

He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Hayden Lake Country Club.

Mr. Teeter was also active in the Lions Club and several city councils in Kansas, and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kansas and Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years; a brother, J. Robert Teeter of Hayden Lake; and several nieces and one nephew.

Yvonne Ek Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Yvonne O. Ek, 88, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Heritage Place retirement community in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ek, who was born in Vay, Idaho, died Tuesday.

She grew up in North Idaho and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School.

She lived in Spokane for more than 40 years and worked as an interviewer for the Washington State Employment Office. She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1987.

Mrs. Ek was a member of the Order of Eastern Star White Rose Chapter 230, Daughters of the Nile and Royal Neighbors in Spokane.

Her husband, Fritz, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister, Helen Lindley of Coeur d’Alene; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Doniece Dennis of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; several great-nieces and one great-nephew.

Robert Ness Sr. Spokane

Visitation for Robert A. Ness Sr., 68, will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Rockford.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Ness died Saturday.

He graduated from Rockford High School and served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Ness worked for the Central Valley School District for 20 years and retired in 1997. He had also worked as a self-employed painter.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435, Spokane Valley Eagles Lodge, American Legion Post 217, Coeur d’Alene Elks Lodge, the Liberty Lake Golf Course Over the Hill Gang and the North Idaho Senior Golf Association in Priest River, Idaho.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Carol; three daughters, Joleen Brooks of Spokane, Cheryl Prouty of Valleyford and Jeanne Ness of Phoenix; three sons, Robert, Mark and Brock Ness, all of Spokane; and 15 grandchildren.

Sue Barber Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Sue Barber, 90, at her request. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Barber, who was born in Minot, N.D., died Sunday.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1917 and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1928. She worked for the state of Idaho for two years.

Mrs. Barber also worked at several area drug stores before beginning a 20-year career as an office clerk at Idaho Water Co. She retired in 1972.

She was a member of Coeur d’Alene First Presbyterian Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening.

Her husband, James, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sisters, Margaret Younkin of Stockton, Calif., and Josephine Berry of Boise; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Mary Goslar Kellogg

Service for Mary Ann Goslar, 89, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at American Lutheran Church in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Goslar died Sunday.

She was born on the fourth of July on Lake Coeur d’Alene near Harrison aboard the Georgia Oaks boat, aka The Lady of the Lake, but her birthday was recorded one day later when the boat went ashore.

Mrs. Goslar lived in Harrison and was a homemaker until moving to the Silver Valley in 1926. She married Jurren Goslar in 1955; he died in 1981.

Mrs. Goslar was a member of the Wallace Ladies Eagles Auxiliary, the Grandmothers Club, the Birthday Club, the Rebekah Lodge, the Shoshone County Sportsman Association, the American Lutheran Church and the Harrison Old Timers Club.

She was active in hunting, fishing and traveling.

Survivors include a brother, Louie Sciuchetti of Kellogg; five sisters, Helen Bailey, Betty Howard and Margie Burrell, all of Kellogg, Jean Stowe of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and May Vidmar of Spokane; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Philip Rumerfield of Smelterville, Idaho.

Edna Shear Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Edna P. Shear, 66, will be Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens .

Mrs. Shear, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

She graduated from West Valley High School in Spokane.

She married William Shear in 1954, and they later lived in Yakima for five years before moving to Hayden Lake, Idaho in 1971. They lived in Twin Lakes, Idaho, and in 1990 moved to Coeur d’Alene.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed bowling, crafts and boating.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years; a son, Terrance Shear of Coeur d’Alene; three sisters, Mabel Meyers of Texas, Doris Wanecek of Wenatchee and Ellen Anderson of Virginia; and four grandchildren.

Iva Helland Spokane

Memorial service for Iva Mae Helland, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

A 60-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Helland died Friday. She was born in Culbertson, Mont.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Ladies of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Her husband, Paul, died in 1968.

Survivors include three daughters, Jean Fields and Sharon Byrd, both of Spokane, and Barbara Freeman of Coeur d’Alene; two sisters, Helen Hill and Lily Shaw, both of California; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
