Hay Bale Wagon Accident Kills Farmer

A farmer died after a hay bale wagon he was steering went out of control, Bonneville County authorities say.

Kent J. Smith, 57, of Idaho Falls, was riding on a bale wagon Tuesday as it was towed by a truck driven by Smith’s friend, Stan Brighton, Sheriff’s Sgt. Karl Casperson said.

The wagon started going faster than the truck, and Smith ended up underneath the wagon.

The accident brings Bonneville County’s number of fatalities this year to 17, tying it with the number of people killed in accidents in all of 1999. That figure was an all-time record for the county.
