Volcanoes Blank Indians
Wesley Faust tossed six shutout innings in relief as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes blanked the Spokane Indians 6-0 on Sunday at Volcanoes Stadium.
Chad Ashlock, in just his second start of the season, threw three shutout innings for the Volcanoes before giving way to Faust (5-4).
The duo held Spokane (26-27) to just six singles and a double in the Northwest League matchup.
Brad Stiles (6-2) took the loss for the Indians. He went 6-2/3 innings and allowed six runs, five earned.
Salem-Keizer (26-27) broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning. Lance Niekro, son of former major league pitcher Joe Niekro, delivered the key blow, a two-out three-run double. Niekro was a second-round draft pick out of Florida Southern this year.
Mark Walker tallied the first run of the seventh with a leadoff home run. Walker’s first home run of the season was also the first four-bagger given up by Stiles this year.
Spokane’s Zach McClellan (1-1) goes against Brion Treadway (0-2) tonight in the second game of the five-game series.
