Cheap Seats

Cover your mouth when you cough

“You are sitting on an airplane, dreading the cross-country flight from Florida to L.A.,” writes T.J. Simers in the Los Angeles Times, “but you discover you are sitting next to a big-league ballplayer, a pitcher for the Dodgers, and things are looking up: At the very least you’re probably going to go home with an autograph.

“Then you happen to glance at USA Today, which reports that Chan Ho Park is being sent home early after complaining of nausea and a serious case of flu, and you realize an autograph is not the only thing you will be taking home.”

Hey, remember those other guys?

Has Tiger mania caused TV cameras and commentators to ignore outstanding performances by other players? Apparently so.

Over one six-hole stretch at last month’s British Open, Phil Mickelson made five birdies and an eagle. The run was ignored by ABC.

Now that’s a tough sell

Bob Shaw of the Cleveland Plain Dealer apparently has his doubts about the success of the local NBA franchise:

“Marketing the Cavaliers these days has to rank right up there in degree of difficulty with being a typewriter salesman.

“Manual typewriters.”

He’d make one heckuva tight end

“He’s a big fellow. That reminded me why I gave up football,” Mariners second baseman Mark McLemore, on colliding with right fielder Jay Buhner while chasing a pop fly.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Mark Grudzielanek, on four losses in six games to Chicago and Milwaukee: “No disrespect to the Brewers and Cubs, but those are teams we absolutely should beat. It’s just not acceptable for us to lose (to them). Good teams beat those teams. We keep talking about it, but we’re not doing it.”

Don’t look back… .

Braves catcher Javy Lopez, on being challenged for the N.L. East lead by the Mets: “They’re playing better than they really are. They won’t keep this up.”

Getting a little nervous are we?

The last word …

“Saying the 49ers could contend for a playoff spot if they get good QB play is like saying you’ll be a millionaire just as soon as you win the lottery.” - Bud Geracie in the San Jose Mercury News.
