Huskies Romp Past Eagles

Senior forward Tami Bennett scored three goals before the 30-minute mark on Saturday, and Washington (1-0) equaled its school record for goals in a match during an 8-0, non-conference win over Eastern Washington at Husky Soccer Field.

Bennett’s second career hat trick gave her 21 career goals. Theresa Wagner added four assists and one goal, and Caroline Putz totaled two goals and one assist.

The match marked the beginning of George Hageage’s EWU coaching stint. EWU was 1-17 last season.

Boys golf

David Fern of Mead High shot an even-par 72 to move up into a tie for 21st place after the second round of the Ping Phoenix Junior Championship at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

Fern’s two-day total of 2-over 146 placed him 11 strokes behind leader Kevin Na of Diamond Bar, Calif.

College volleyball

Tamara Van Engelen, Janelle Ruen and Robyn Sonju-Felder combined for 32 kills to lead Eastern to a 4-1 win over its alumnae at Reese Court.

Ruen added 14 digs and Jessie Wright had 27 assists for the Eagles. Kim Maxwell of the alumnae, a 1999 All-Big Sky Conference first-team player, had eight kills and 12 digs.

EWU opens its season Friday at the L & L/Michigan State University Classic in East Lansing.

Prep volleyball

Post Falls defeated Lakeland and Priest River in season-opening, non-league matches at Rathdrum. Lakeland topped Priest River. Ashley Jamison had 26 assists on the day for Lakeland.

Girls soccer

Heidi Oakes punched in a rebound in the closing minutes to lift Lewiston to a 3-2 win at Post Falls in a Border League opener.
