A-3 Independents
Wallace Miners
1999 record: 4-5
Coach: Dave Rounds
Years coaching, record: 9th, 38-37-1
Current record: 0-1
Starters, lettermen returning: 8, 15
Key players: Tony Caron, senior, 5-9, 160, tailback; Shawn Stutzke, sr., 5-6, 180, linebacker; Josh Maravilla, junior, 5-10, 206, lb; Chase Bennett, sr., 5-11, 178, tight end; Brian Rehnborg, sr., 6-0, 170, defensive end; Seth Pommerening, jr., 5-8, 150, quarterback.
Coach’s comments: “Our mental toughness is down and we will need to get it up if we are to do well.”
Outlook: Center Jake Pommerening will be snapping the ball to his identical twin brother, Seth. If the Miners’ passing game can catch up to their running game, Rounds is optimistic. The heart of Wallace will be tested weekly.
Lakeside Knights
1999 record: 1-8
Coach: Ron Miller
Years coaching, record: 9th, 36-39
Current record: 0-1
Starters, lettermen returning: 7, 14
Key players: Justin Hendrickx, jr., 5-9, 180, fullback/lb; Leonard Johnson, sr., 5-8, 160, tb/lb; Brandon Pluff, sr., 5-10, 180, qb/defensive back; Ed Fasthorse, jr., 5-9, 180, guard; Darryl Howard, sr., 5-11, 230, tackle.
Coach’s comments: “We are one of the smallest (A-3) schools. I have my complete backfield back from last year. They will also play defense.”
Outlook: With nearly 300 yards rushing in their opener, the Knights may run with any team. But low squad numbers means the load will fall on the shoulders of a few.
