Launch Lane Closes At Higgens Point
The northern launch lane at the Higgens Point boat launch is closed, due to a partial failure of the ramp’s support structure. The southern launch lane is still open for boats under 20 feet long.
The launch was open last summer because most boaters used the upper parts of the ramp during higher water levels. Lower winter levels mean boat trailers would have to use “unsupported areas,” state parks officials say. The launch surface is supported by a series of gabion baskets, several of which were found to be failing during inspections last summer. The metal cages are filled with rocks and used in road construction.
The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation is applying for a grant to start repair work. Officials are considering whether to restrict the launching of larger boats in 2001, according to a news release from the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.
