Mead’S Balance Does The Trick

Mead High used a balanced attack and hit 6 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter Friday night to pull away from Gonzaga Prep for a 49-40 win in Greater Spokane League basketball at Prep.

Adriane Kehl hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter to give Mead a four-point lead and the Bullpups, who hit just 15 of 54 shots, never got closer.

Alisa Lewis had 21 points and 19 rebounds for Prep, but only hit 9 of 24 shots.

Sophomore point guard Bre Mulvey led Mead with 12 points with Kourtney Shorts and Melissa Brodsky adding 10 each.

The Tigers pounded the visiting Titans 34-19 on the boards and pulled away in the fourth quarter for the win.

Kathleen Malone led LC with nine rebounds and 11 points.

U-Hi played without starting senior point guard Lindsey Steblaj, who tore the ACL in her right knee in Tuesday’s game. She joins her twin sister on the sideline for the rest of the season.

Sara Steblaj injured the same knee - making the same move - when she first injured her knee in the playoffs last year. Last year’s GSL co-MVP, she re-injured her knee in a fall-league game.

The Tigers held Heidi Bunknowske to eight points, 11 below her average.

Saxons guards Katie Foster, Courtney Lynn and Angie Clift combined for 37 points, most in the first half, to defeat the visiting Wildcats.

Clift had all nine of her points in Ferris’ 27-point second quarter that produced a 43-19 lead. The Saxons, who finished 22 of 25 from the line, made 13 of 14 free throws in the second quarter.

Foster finished with 16 points.

At NC, the Highlanders built a big lead as Chelsea Osborn and 6-foot-2 sophomore Ericka Moeller had career highs with 21 and 16 points, respectively, then weathered a rally by the Indians.

Eileen McRae led NC with a career-best 13 points.

Five players scored in double figures as the Bears doubled up the host Pirates.

Katie Rodgers, who hit 7 of 10 shots, and Felice Moore had season highs with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Rachel Jewell had a career-high 11 points. Emily Westerberg hit 8 of 13 shots for 21 points.

Sarah Abrahamson had a career-high 16 points for Rogers and Allie O’Shogay had eight rebounds.
