Kenneth Kayano Spokane
Memorial service for Kenneth K. Kayano, 54, will be at 7 p.m. today at Highland Park United Methodist Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr.
Kayano died Tuesday.
After graduating in 1964 from Lewis and Clark High School, he served in the Navy.
He later graduated from Gonzaga University and worked as a buyer for Liberty Equipment.
Survivors include his mother, Matsuye Kayano, a brother, Edward Kayano, and a sister, Lynda Peterson, all of Spokane.
Marie Forseth Spokane
Funeral Mass for Marie V. Forseth, 93, will be at 9 a.m. today at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Forseth, who was born in Winsted, Minn., died Thursday.
She married Stuart Forseth in 1934. They lived in Minneapolis until moving to Spokane in 1972.
Mrs. Forseth worked as a restaurant hostess.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral and the Altar Society. She volunteered at St. Joseph Care Center.
Her husband died in 1984.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Thomas Hillebrant Spokane
Visitation for Thomas A. Hillebrant, 63, will be from noon to 1 p.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, 732 W. Indiana. Service will follow at 1 p.m. at the church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hillebrant, a 36-year Spokane resident, died Sunday. He was born in Salt Lake City.
He was an office manager for 23 years and then operated Quality Press, a print shop, for 11 years. He retired in 1993.
Mr. Hillebrant was a member of the Rotary Club and was a member and former bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2nd Ward.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline; a son, Tom Hillebrant Jr. of Aberdeen, Wash.; a daughter, Julie Hillebrant of Provo, Utah; four brothers, Denny, Tim and Dan Hillebrant, all of Pocatello, Idaho, and Jon Hillebrant of Aberdeen; a sister, Jeannie Carkeet of Turlock, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Charles `Sam’ McNearney Sagle, Idaho
Visitation for Charles Samuel “Sam” McNearney, 54, will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Sandpoint First Baptist Church with burial to follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint.
Mr. McNearney, who was born in Sandpoint, died Wednesday.
In 1964 he graduated from Sandpoint High School. He served in the Navy for four years as a sonar technician in Iceland and Cape Hatteras.
In 1970 he married Lorna Harbison.
Mr. McNearney graduated from North Idaho College with a vocational degree in 1971 and served in the Navy Reserve Program for 21 years.
He worked for the Forest Service for 30 years as a civil engineering technician.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife; two children, Mark McNearny of Helena and Lisa McNearny of Moscow; his mother, Angeline McNearny of Sandpoint; four sisters, his twin Sandra Moody of Sandpoint, and Marilyn Slette and Shirley Kennedy, both of Liberty Lake and Glenda Poston of Bonners Ferry; and a brother, David McNearney of Redding, Calif.
Kenneth Bockmeyer Spokane
No service will be held for Kenneth D. Bockmeyer at his request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bockmeyer, who was born in Missoula, died Sunday. He was 77.
He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War. In 1950 he married Patricia Knerr.
He was a 50-year Spokane resident and graduated from Kinman Business College. He worked as an accountant until retiring in 1987.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters; two granddaughters and one great-grandson.
Louise Metlow Chewelah, Wash.
Visitation for Louise Metlow, 77, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Service is planned for 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church in Valley, Wash. Burial will follow at Valley Cemetery.
Born in Fruitland, Wash., Mrs. Metlow died Tuesday.
Her family moved to Chewelah when she was an infant.
She worked as a senior caregiver in the private health-care industry.
Mrs. Metlow was a member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet Matzdorf of Valley and Rose Farnsworth of Vacaville, Calif.; a son, Butch Metlow of Valley; a brother, Richard Peone; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lilah Carpenter Spokane
Visitation for Lilah Carpenter, 86, will be from noon to 5 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
A 60-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Carpenter died Sunday. She was born in Nampa, Idaho.
She worked as a sales clerk in the retail industry and was a member of Christ Gospel Fellowship Church.
Her husband of 61 years, Fred, died in 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Tyler, and two sons, Delbert and Gerald Carpenter, all of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Jacquie Simpson Hayden, Idaho
Memorial service for Jacquie Simpson, 51, will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel.
Mrs. Simpson, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.
She grew up in Spokane and in 1967 graduated from Wellpinit High School.
In 1969 she married Jay Simpson and they settled in Coeur d’Alene.
Mrs. Simpson was a homemaker. She had been involved with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 27 years and was also a 4-H Club leader.
She moved to Hayden in 1999.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jim Wines and Jay Simpson Jr., both of Hayden; a daughter, Angela Anderson of Post Falls; four brothers, Ricky Wines of Spokane, Randy Wines of Springdale, Wash., and David and Kenny Wines, both of Elk; a sister, Eileen Arnoux of Fruitland, Wash.; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Charles Whiteley Coeur d’Alene
A gathering for family and friends of Charles “Chuck” Whiteley, 82, will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the family home in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Whiteley, who died Wednesday, was born in Council, Idaho.
He moved to North Idaho as a small child, and his father opened one of Coeur d’Alene’s first IGA grocery stores on Sherman Avenue in 1934. He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1935. The family opened Whiteley’s Electric on Sherman Avenue during the 1940s.
Mr. Whiteley served in the Army in the European Theatre during World War II and was stationed stateside during the Korean War. Mr. Whiteley lived in North Idaho most of his life and had worked as a traveling salesman for International Shoe Co.
Survivors include his wife, Emma “Teance”; a son, Claude Whiteley of Coeur d’Alene; five daughters, Sandra Harbert of Spokane, Margaret Gooley of Post Falls, Pam Jensen of Pocatello, Idaho, Barbara Boyles of Kalispell, Mont., and Holly Vanden Heuvel of Coeur d’Alene; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Wendy Wootress-Goldberg Spokane
Memorial service for Wendy Lee Wootress-Goldberg, 41, was Thursday in the chapel at Holy Family Hospital.
Mrs. Wootress-Goldberg, a 24-year Spokane resident, died Monday. She was born in Bad-Tolz, Germany.
She graduated from Shadle Park High School and received a nursing degree from Spokane Community College.
She worked as a registered nurse for 20 years in the intensive-care unit at Holy Family Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Herb; her father, John; two brothers, John and Richard; and two sisters, Gwenna and Katie.
Harold Dennie Jr. Spokane
Visitation for Harold R. “Hal” Dennie, Jr., 81, will be from noon to 5 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Funeral Home. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
Born in Spangle, Mr. Dennie died Wednesday.
He graduated from Fairfield High School and majored in economics at Washington State College.
During World War II he served in the Army. He was a company commander with the 1st Armored Division in Italy and Germany. He received the Silver Star in 1945.
Mr. Dennie moved to Spokane in 1946 and worked as a salesman for Star Machinery Co.
He was a volunteer for the Service Corps of Retired Executives and was named volunteer of the year in 1993.
Mr. Dennie was a member of the Manito Country Club.
His wife, Lorraine, died in 1990.
Survivors include four sons, William and Neil Dennie, both of Spokane, Dale Dennie of Kirkland, Wash., and Lee Dennie of Arlington, Wash.; a brother, Richard Dennie of Woodland, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Benjamin Kosse Durham, N.C.
Memorial service for Benjamin Mark Kosse, 23, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Sandpoint United Methodist Church.
Mr. Kosse, who was born in Spokane, died Dec. 7.
He grew up in Davenport, Wash., and moved to Sandpoint when he was in the seventh grade. He was a junior high science fair winner and received Eighth-Grade Science Student of the Year honors.
Mr. Kosse also served as an Idaho representative to the Department of Education Honors Research Program in New York and was a member of the Sandpoint High School Math and Science Club, graduating with honors in 1995.
He received several scholarships and attended the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York for two years. Mr. Kosse then became a beta tester for Red Hat Linux and worked with Internet associates in improving computer programs and game development. He moved to Durham in July and was a computer programmer.
He shared his computer skills and knowledge with Priest River Junior High students, local amateurs, and members of Sandpoint United Methodist Church. He was accomplished in martial arts, was active in social justice and human dignity causes and wrote poetry, computer games and prose.
Survivors include his parents, Ray and Dee; a sister, Sarah; and his grandmother, Ruth French.
Harold Dickinson Seven Bays, Wash.
Memorial service for Harold C. Dickinson, 73, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash.
Mr. Dickinson, who was born in Thornton, Wash., died Tuesday.
He grew up in Thornton before moving to Garfield, Wash.
In 1945 he moved north of Potlatch, Idaho. He married Roberta Schussman in 1946.
Mr. Dickinson worked for the Potlatch Forest and at various jobs in Garfield and Colfax, Wash., before moving to Spokane in 1951. He then worked for Kaiser Aluminum at Trentwood and retired in 1982.
He and his wife moved to the Seven Bays area on Lake Roosevelt, where they operated a marina and store in 1983.
Mr. Dickson was a member of the Steelworkers Union No. 329, the Deer Meadows Golf Course and the coffee klatch at Seven Bays.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kay McMullen of Mead, Kathy Myhre of Chattaroy and Sue Jamerson of Seattle; a sister, Betty Warrington of Spokane; six grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
Ellen Hutts Spokane
Memorial service for Ellen Marie Hutts, 79, will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Northwest Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3903 N. Oak. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Hutts died Wednesday.
She graduated from North Central High School.
Mrs. Hutts worked at Armour Meats before marrying Edward Hutts in 1947.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Northwest Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Her husband died in 1993.
Mrs. Hutts is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Jamison of Spokane and Vickie Korlaske of Hoquiam, Wash.; a son, James Hutts of Spokane; two sisters, Esther Stewart and Mabel Kucera, both of Spokane; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Marie Benson Spokane
Visitation for Marie E. Benson, 91, will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Private burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Otis Orchards.
Mrs. Benson, who was born in Medical Lake, died Monday.
She was a Spokane resident for more than 70 years.
Mrs. Benson worked as a registered nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital and area nursing homes.
Two husbands, Martin Klasen and Robert Benson, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Marie Felton of Coeur d’Alene and Barbara Bergman of Lompoc, Calif.; two sons, Martin Klasen of Spokane and Jerry Klasen of Loon Lake, Wash.; a sister, Alice Sunderman of Spokane; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Chester Smith Ritzville, Wash.
Visitation for Chester S. Smith, a lifetime Adams County resident, will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Emanuel Lutheran Church in Odessa, Wash. Burial will follow at Odessa Cemetery.
Mr. Smith, 78, died Thursday. He was born on the family farm in Lind, Wash.
He graduated in 1940 from Ritzville High School and served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946.
In 1946 he married Marciel Sackmann. They farmed with his father until moving to the Beale place, where they farmed for more than 46 years.
Mr. Smith and his wife moved into Ritzville in 1990.
He was a member of Zion Emanuel Lutheran Church in Odessa, where he taught Sunday school and served as church secretary and treasurer. He was a board member of the Lind Grange Supply and a member of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers and the Ritzville Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was named honorary chapter farmer by the Lind Future Farmers of America.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Timothy Smith of Lind and Roger Smith of Selah, Wash.; a daughter, Kathy Balcom of Lind; a brother, Herbert Smith of Colbert; two sisters, Vera Nissen and Violet Kalamon, both of Spokane; nine grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
