Missing Boy May Be Runaway Searchers Fail To Find Hayden Teen, But Friend Returns Home
A 14-year-old North Idaho boy was still missing Monday night after Kootenai County sheriff’s officials had searched for him for 10 hours around Canfield Mountain.
Colin Bean, of Hayden, was last seen by his parents around 10:30 a.m. Sunday playing with his friend Travis Deitz, 14, in his front yard on Lookout Drive. He left a note for his parents saying, “Went exploring, be back by 6 p.m.”
After the boys failed to return, the father called Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies around 11 p.m. Sunday.
Teams with search dogs began scouring the snow-covered area around Canfield Mountain around 1 a.m. Monday but found no sign the boys went into the woods, said Sgt. Andy Boyle.
Searchers stopped looking for the boys around noon Monday. Deitz came home safely around 3:30 p.m. Monday, his family said.
Another search began when Deitz told deputies he had an argument with Bean and they separated on the mountain, Boyle said. However, Deitz later said he and Bean were at a party in a local motel. Based on that information, the Sheriff’s Department suspended the search and have listed Bean as a runaway.
Anyone with more information about Bean’s whereabouts is asked to call the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department at (208) 664-1511.
