Prep basketball

The Freeman (Wash.) Christmas Tournament has developed into a preview of next week’s Intermountain League girls showdown.

Bonners Ferry and Lakeland both won during tournament openers on Thursday, setting up today’s championship game at 6 p.m.

BF and Lakeland are also the final two undefeated teams in IML play. They’re set to meet Jan. 5 at Bonners Ferry.

Julie Bateman made 7 of 17 shots from the floor and the Badgers held the host Scotties to one field goal in the fourth quarter to earn the win.

BF finished 23 of 63 from the field, Freeman 16 of 39.

Krista Freeman of the Scotties made 4 of 7 field goals and 6 of 9 free throws.

Freeman will meet Okanogan at 2 p.m. in today’s consolation.

Kootenai missed 10 of 12 field-goal attempts during the first half. Tana Dooney and Janelle Scheffelmaier of the Warriors combined for 15 rebounds.

Kootenai will play Timberline at 3 p.m. today in the consolation. Troy and Salmon River will meet for the title.

Zack Axel hit 3 of 4 free throws in overtime and Shawn Epler had six steals to lead the Stags over the Fishermen.

Ilwaco stole an inbounds pass with 16 seconds left in regulation, but missed a field-goal attempt. The Stags called timeout with 4 seconds left, then missed a shot at the buzzer.

The Stags overcame the absence of Adam Swinyard (24.3 points per game), who made the trip but is recovering from an injured kneecap.

The tourney drew several teams that played at last year’s State 2A Tournament. DP will meet Omak or White Salmon at 6 tonight for the title.

Cusick snapped a six-game losing streak. Nathan Martin hit two 3-pointers to help Riverside to a first-quarter lead.

The Panthers will meet host Reardan at 7:30 tonight for the title. Riverside and Columbia will play at 4:30 for the consolation.
