Gonnella Boosts The Panthers

There wasn’t much fanfare, but the Mead girls basketball team got a big boost Friday night.

Leah Gonnella, a second-team All-Greater Spokane League pick last year as a sophomore, saw her first action of the year at Mt. Spokane after tearing the ACL of her left knee in June. The Panthers celebrated with a 55-38 win.

Though Gonnella was held scoreless - she was less than complimentary about her shooting - she clearly made a difference on defense and in the way the offense ran.

“It was good; my team helped me a lot,” Gonnella said. “It’s different. I’m happy to be back, that’s for sure.”

Melissa Brodsky and Bre Mulvey, who led a balanced Mead attack, had six points apiece in the first quarter as the Panthers took the lead.

Jill Wyrick had 14 rebounds for Mt. Spokane.

Ferris 51, Rogers 38

Courtney Lynn hit 6 of 8 shots for a career-high 15 points as the Saxons forced 26 turnovers to beat the Pirates at Rogers.

Allie O’Shogay had a double-double for Rogers with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Ferris (7-0) kept pace with Central Valley for the league lead and meets the Bears at Ferris on Tuesday.

Katie Gillum hit 9 of 10 free throws and Juliann Laney 8 of 9 as the visiting Bullpups went 19 of 21 from the line in defeating the Highlanders.

Laney finished with 16 points. Alisa Lewis only had six points, almost 15 below her average.

Katie McCaffery had a career-high 18 for Shadle.

Keri Murray had seven assists and six steals and sophomore Heidi Bunkowske had a career-high 25 points as the Titans defeated the visiting Indians.
