Lakeside Wins Opener

Amy Fuchs hit three of four free throws in the fourth quarter to lead the way as Lakeside converted from the charity line down the stretch to defeat Prairie of Cottonwood 38-32 in a District I-II A-3 girls basketball playoff game Monday night in Lewiston.

The Knights limited Prairie to no field goals and just two points in the second quarter in building a 17-9 halftime lead, then weathered a Prairie charge the second half.

Mariah Middleton had 10 points and seven rebounds to lead Lakeside.

Fuchs had eight points, five rebounds and two assists. Leah Rehder of Prairie had a game-high 13 points.

Lakeside will play Potlatch, a 44-40 upset winner over South No. 1 seed Kamiah, in the second round Friday while Prairie plays Kamiah in loserout action Thursday.

In the completion of the first round Wednesday, Wallace meets Clearwater Valley and Lapwai faces Timberline.

St. Maries 54, B. Ferry 31

The Lumberjacks, hitting 11 of 17 shots from the field the first half, broke to a 27-9 lead and weren’t threatened. Tiffany Holdahl hit 3 of 7 3-pointers in a 13-point game to lead the Lumberjacks’ 6-for-13 effort from behind the arc.

Bonners Ferry, which made just 3 of 18 first-half shots in falling behind, did gain some consolation. The Badgers won a coin toss for the third-place tiebreaker if they and the Lumberjacks wind up sharing third in the final Intermountain League standings. St. Maries is 5-5 with its league season completed and Bonners Ferry 4-4 with two games to play.

East Valley two-way standout Blake Horgan has committed to the University of Montana. A linebackertight end, Horgan expects to play defensive tackle.
