Top Dog

For the third year in a row, Labrador retrievers such as Buddy, shown here romping in the White House tulip garden, are the most-wanted dogs in America, or at least the most registered with the American Kennel Club. Golden Retrievers second place for a second straight year. “It goes to show that Labradors and Goldens are wonderful pets, the kind that people want for a family,” said David Roberts, a spokesman for the AKC. Overall for 1999, German shepherds came in third place, followed by dachshunds, beagles, poodles, chihuahuas, rottweilers, Yorkshire terriers and boxers.
