Despite Nieman, Vandals Lose

Alli Nieman scored 36 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, both highs for the game, but it wasn’t enough to lift Idaho to victory as the Vandals fell to Pacific 63-57 in Big West Conference women’s basketball action Friday night at the A.G. Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif.

The Vandals (11-8, 4-2) outshot the Tigers (12-6, 3-3) 38 percent to 34 percent and had a 47-41 rebound advantage yet still came up short.

Idaho shot a dismal 1 for 15 from 3-point range and turned the ball over 27 times. Pacific hit only 1 of 9 3-pointers but had 10 fewer turnovers.

Selena Ho paced the Tigers with 15 points and seven rebounds. Millie Kimpton added 10 points and nine boards, while Vanessa Dupont came off the bench to score 14 points.

Nieman hit 15 of 24 shots from the floor, while the rest of the Vandals made just 5 of 29.

Pepperdine 89, Gonzaga 67

Rasheeda Clark made 10 of 17 shots from the floor and finished with a game-high 29 points to lead the Waves (12-8, 5-2) to a West Coast Conference win over the Bulldogs (9-11, 2-5) in Malibu, Calif.

Sydney Perno had 13 points and pulled down five rebounds to pace Gonzaga. Jessica Malone added 12 points and five rebounds.

Pepperdine hit 55 percent of its shots from the floor, including 42 percent (8 of 19) from 3-point range. The Bulldogs shot 40 percent from the field and connected on just 3 of 16 shots from behind the arc.

The Waves outrebounded Gonzaga 41-29 for the game.

“We made a run at them at the end of the first half and felt pretty good,” said Gonzaga coach Kellee Barney. “But we couldn’t get anything going in the second half. When we have more offensive rebounds (15) than defensive rebounds (14) we’re in trouble. We’ve been getting more shots than our opponents. We’re just not putting them in.”

Gonzaga travels to Loyola Marymount for a game tonight.

Whitworth 66, Linfield 47

Jamie Wakefield tossed in a game-high 18 points, Jennifer Bennett added 13 points and the pair combined for 16 rebounds to lead the Pirates (12-6, 6-3) to a Northwest Conference rout over the Wildcats (13-6, 8-2) in McMinnville, Ore.

Whitworth held Linfield to a measly 22 percent (11 of 50) shooting from the floor. The Pirates connected at a 51 percent clip (27 of 53) for the game.

Whitworth took command with a 15-2 run that turned a 9-4 deficit into a 19-11 lead midway through the first half. The Pirates had a commanding 43-27 edge on the boards.
